We had a most excellent Halloween at FGC, but I'll detail that in another post. Presenting, for your consideration, the best of the fics I read in the past week:

In addition, there’s the matter of Cas who’s come to mean more to Dean than he wants to admit. Fighting against Hell spawn and fallen angels, passing through burned cities and salt deserts, Dean believes in the success of their mission until their luck runs out and Hell threatens to swallow Cas whole. A couple few weeks ago, right after the annual glut of awesome vids post-VividCon, I put together a vid show for all of us at FGC. It was so much fun that I thought my f-list might enjoy it too. Some of these are new but most of them are old favorites. Plz to enjoy.

First: For those of you who didn't know, it's International Blog Against Racism Week. The excellent people over at [livejournal.com profile] ibarw have all of the posts, regardless of content, linked from the community.

Second: I seem to be on quite the grrrl power kick, if the story I posted last night is any indication. So to continue the trend I've embedded under the cut some of my favorite female-centric vids. Plz to enjoy.

Okay, so it's a little after 2AM and I was lying in bed thinking about Battlestar Galactica and the things I would've done differently if I had been in charge of plotting the course of the show. And then I realized I had to get up and write it all down or I was going to forget it all. So here I am.

Since, you know, I apparently retell TV shows in my spare time. Everybody needs a hobby I guess.

And FYI, I still haven't seen the last half of season four so I'm not going to talk about that. I will not analyze that which I can't be arsed to watch. *pinkie swears*

Oh Ron Moore, You Are So Very Smart Until You Are Not )

And now it's after 3AM and I really need to go to bed. Let's all hope that I don't have any more stunning revelations between now and when I fall asleep. *crosses fingers*

Also, I hope this makes sense. The later it is the more incoherent I become (and, strangely, the more polysyllabic words I tend to throw around). Please feel free to add your own ideas about what BSG could've done better, or what it did really well, or whether I should bow down and beg Ron Moore's forgiveness. Because retelling TV shows is no fun when you're doing it in a vacuum. *nods*

Spent the weekend with fangirls and, lo, it was marvelous. It was especially marvelous to spend time with [livejournal.com profile] hiyacynth who I wish I could see all of the time, but time and space too often conspire against us. Shows were watched and crack was discussed and junk food was eaten, the holy triumverate of fangirl Good Times were achieved.

Saw My Bloody Valentine 3D on Friday with the Baylors before [livejournal.com profile] hiyacynth arrived (she really doesn't like horror flicks). It was fun in a ridiculous slasher movie sort of way and the 3D effects were most excellent. I'm not sure it was entirely worth my $10 but a good time was had by all.

Came home this afternoon and watched the new BSG. I don't have anything thinky to say at the moment, I have to let it stew for a bit longer and see how the rest of the season shapes up. But, man, the TV I'm watching this year is almost, without fail, a real drain emotionally.

You know what's not an emotional drain? The fact that tomorrow we inagurate Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States of America. I'll be skipping class to watch it live (and cry and cry and cry, I'm sure) and I can't wait. Tomorrow's going to be a good day.

Saturday has become tv day. I've watched some Sarah Jane Adventures, this week's BSG, am about a third of the way through the second episode of HBO's John Adams miniseries and the Doctor is downloading.

Am also dog-sitting today. It's a good thing the Pup is used to people typing on the computer at all hours of the day and night. He's being very patient with me.

Re: Long Distance Call ) Now I have an urge to write up a whole post about the depth Supernatural's mythological base and how that gives me, as a viewer and fan such satisfaction.

BTW, Dean? The Fifteenth Century was not the Dark Ages. Just so you know. ;-)

Re: BSG. It's official, I hate Gaius Baltar as much as I hate Ruby. Death For All ) It's hit the point where I'm only watching anymore because I'm curious about where it's all going. And cause Saul Tigh is still kind of my hero, until they squick that storyline out, as well.

Okay, have to boogie. The Pup was awoken and now requires my attention. I think a walk is in order, and then a bath.

In looking through my icons I was reminded that I had nicknamed this one 'zeusnhera' which is an analogy that I still think is very applicable. And that's one of the things that left me a little flat with the vast majority of the BSG fic that I've seen, very few people, if any, have attempted to incorporate Greek mythology into their writing. There are some interesting parallels between mythological figures and the characters that deserve to be explored via fic. Also, I rarely see any mention of Colonial religion in fic. I think Moore&Co have done an intelligent job of weaving mythological themes into the series and it's a shame that so few of the fen have followed up on that tantalizing thread.

In sum: there is so much more to that show than Lee/Kara. Oh boy is there ever.

I finally sat down and watched the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven and it makes the movie a thousand times more comprehensible. No wonder Ridley Scott was so pissed when the studios forced the cuts down his throat, especially when that action probably didn't increase the box office take even a tiny little bit. It's a fantastic, fascinating movie, an intelligent and sensitive historical epic. Wow, way to sound like a sound bite, I know, but it's still true.

You wanna know why I saw Kingdom of Heaven in the theater? Not for any high-falutin history major reason, let me assure you. It's just, Orlando was so happy to see Billy at the premiere and he seemed so nervous about his first big leading role that I just had to go and support the guy. Plus the fact that Orlando and Marton Csokas are antagonists lets me say things to my empty apartment like, "Oh noez, the elves are fighting." =D

It's funny that once upon a time I didn't think I'd be a writer. I loved stories but I didn't feel as if I had any to tell. Now I'm swimming in ideas and have to try to balance everything in my head while actually finishing projects I've already started. And go to law school. It's kinda the best type of crazy there is.

Which leads me to the requisite reminder that prompts are up for grabs at the Crossover Challenge. You know you wanna ...

Ron Moore and Co. are really smoking the good crack over on Battlestar Galactica, aren't they? I'm sure they have some plan, probably, and either way, it made for an intensely enthralling hour of television and that's really all that I crave from that quarter these days. FYI )

Here are some more Buffy s.2 re-watch reactions for you. What's My Line, Part One - Bad Eggs )

It is abso-freakin-lutely gorgeous outside today. I got to wear sandals while walking the dog and get started on those very necessary summer sandal calluses. It's so warm that I have all of the windows open and I'm wearing shorts and complaining about how long and heavy my hair is. It's great!
liptonrm_backup: (Default)
Ha! Remembered to take the soda cans back this week. Victory is mine!

Doh, forgot to talk about Buffy season 8. I guess I should do that.

Fanfiction From the Author )

PSA: If anyone wants to read the comic and has trouble getting her/his hands on it I'm more then happy to stop by Clem's and pick you up a copy. They guy who runs the shop is pretty okay, even if the douche-y comics fanboys at the back of the store made disparaging comments about me picking up Buffy comics. Whatever, if anyone understands what kinds of jackasses fanboys can be it's a fangirl.

Very, very, very, very much enjoyed BSG last night. There's the Lee Adama I had respect for. I've missed you dude. Glad you've gotten out of that lake of man pain and started standing up for your beliefs again. Spoilery )

Had lots of weird, depressing dreams last night. I hate that cause I always wake up in a weird, depressed mood afterwards. Thank goodness for the balming effect of the internets. You're too good to me.
liptonrm_backup: (Default)
What the hell? America's Next Top Model is not supposed to make me cry. And yet, it did. Shut up! You can't prove anything! The only one who saw those tears was the Pup and you won't get anything out of him!

Stupid hormones.

My Cafepress goodies came today. Yay! I got a bumper sticker and some magnets and a t-shirt that I had to put on right away. And the hardcover copy of Kay's The Darkest Road also showed up. I've been rereading the Fionavar Tapestry and by some strange tragedy my old copy had somehow disappeared into the aether. That's okay, it was so beat up it was about to fall apart anyway. Looking forward to another good cry once I get to the end of that one.

The mail has been so good to me today. Life is pretty okay. Except for the headache. Like it isn't enough that the weather is going from 70F to 40F but the pressure change just has to give me a sinus headache. Thank goodness I always have a lot of drugs laying around for just such an occasion. Medication is our friend. =D

I have a feeling that I should start watching Jericho more (as in, at all). I was excited in the beginning but the early execution left me a little flat. Now I see they're doing some fun stuff that I highly approve of. We'll see, the SPN tunnel-vision is kind of overwhelming. And scary.

I enjoyed this week's Battlestar Galactica. Finally we're getting the Lee that we saw way back in season one, the idealistic crusader. What a relief. I have been so tired of the way they've used the character since then that I was kind of starting to hate him and that's no fun. All of my hate for a character on that show needs to only be directed at Gaius Baltar. I want him dead like no one's business.

Going to Clem's Comic Book Shop to pick up the Buffy season 8 comic tomorrow. It is both appropriate that I'm going to Clem's to buy it and a little intimidating. I've been avoiding the shop because I'm sure there'll be a salesguy there like Jack Black in High Fidelity who will mock me for not reading the right comic books. Bleh.

Oh, that's right, I wanted to talk about the gloriously stupid things people do in movies. Cut Because I Know I'll Ramble )

There's some thunder rumbling in the distance. The Pup will not be amused.
liptonrm_backup: (Default)
Wow, I only had 3 cases to read for Contracts tomorrow. Why couldn't today have been Thursday because now I'm *gasp* bored and I always have a buttload of stuff to do for Properties on Thursday nights. Speaking of law school:

I got my grades back )

Ummmm, I don't have much else. It's a good thing no one watched the SAGs with me on Sunday cause I was really loud about my hatred for Grey's Anatomy. Don't even ask me why, there is no logical, rational reason, it's just the way it is.

BSG )

So, apparently I've become pretty damn bloodthirsty in my old age. I've been telling them to just kill Sylar for weeks now and when we re-watched the Flukeman episode of X-Files last Friday I kept on yelling at them to shoot it, already. Apparently people feel sorry for poor ickle Fluke-y? Really? 'Cause it was killing people and it didn't look like it was going to stop. We really, really don't want lots and lots of Flukes running around the sewers, you guys, the alligators are bad enough.

Man, now I'm just babbling. It's cold and snowy here and I smile everytime I step outside. Yes I know it's cool to hate the snow and I will, in a couple weeks, but I'm still on that new season high. I'll admit it, I love Michigan. It's home, ya know?

Because I'm a big ol' sheep and if [livejournal.com profile] hiyacynth jumped off of a cliff I probably would too...

2006 in Fic Meme )

Dangit, I have laundry to do and, ugh, cases to brief. Classes start again tomorrow. Oh joy, oh rapture. *blehs*

ETA: I've decided to be like Andy and spend most of the day in my bathrobe and slippers. *happy sigh*

I can't believe I wrote more fic. Happy belated birthday, [livejournal.com profile] hiyacynth, my dear. You are, as always, my inspiration in all things.

Title: chase the stars across the sky
Fandom: Battlestar Galactica/Supernatural crossover
Disclaimer: I own absolutely nothing. The real puppetmasters are Ron Moore and Eric Kripke, I only borrowed their toys for a little while.
Rating: PG
Spoilers: Vague season one BSG spoilers for ‘Water’, nothing specific for SPN.
Summary: Chief is in some trouble and his crew calls in someone to help him out.
Dedication: This is all for you, [livejournal.com profile] hiyacynth, babe.

( From beside him he could hear Dean communicating with the ship, a low-level stream of jokes interspersed with brusque responses to landing coordinates and instructions )

*sigh* There weren't any angsty heart to hearts, as I had hoped, but I did bend the powers of time and space to get two of your favorite boyfriends into the same room at the same time. That'll do, in a pinch. ;-)

Have been completely backwards about updating lately. When I'm online my brain doesn't seem to want to do anything but skim around and read fic and posting requires the use of actual brain cells, which are always in short supply around here but doubly so at the moment. However, I had to stop by and say I LOVE TV!!!!!! I am filled with love for the medium and the product and my shows are KILLING ME right now and I couldn't be happier.

SPN )

BSG )

TV kicks my ass in the best possible way. I've also seen quite a few of the new shows and of the ones I've seen (Studio 60, Jericho, Runaway, Standoff, Kidnapped, The Nine) I have to say that Heroes is my favorite. It has definite potential for awesomeness. However, I'm not sure you'll see a ton of squee for it because my brain is completely filled up with the two shows that own my soul. If I could go to Vancouver tomorrow I would so be there. Dayumn.
liptonrm_backup: (Default)
Day Three of law school done and over. Yes, you can expect updates like this until I'm through my first week, at the very least. Anyway, today was Criminal Law and one of the cases we discussed was from 1884 and had to do with cannibalism on the High Seas. And it was a serious discussion. I was highly amused.

That reminds me, yesterday in Properties the professor talked about Locke and Rousseau and even though it was the philosophers he was referencing I couldn't stop myself from thinking about the characters on Lost. This is what I wrote in my notebook: "Central dilemma of Lost between those who claim and those who don't. Maybe?" The idea stemmed from the Lockean principle that property is central to civil society while Rousseau proposes that property is the cause of all of society's evils. You may discuss if you feel so inclined.

Either my fannish life will bend to my law studies or my law studies will bend to my fannish life. I'm of the opinion that the latter will be the case. ;-)

Have you all seen the new BSG webisode? If you look closely I swear you'll see the original character I invented in this story. I am giddy I tell you. My TV psychic powers are only growing. Soon I shall rule the media and all shall love me and despair. *cue evil laughter*

No, you don't want to go out and buy yourself ice cream. I don't care what kind of excuses you use, you have no money and cannot afford ice cream. There are some very nice apples in the fridge that you can eat. Yes, I know that apples aren't ice cream but you're just going to have to deal, so deal. Sheesh, my not-so-inner 5 year-old can be a pain.

Had an absolutely fabulous weekend imbibing in the Dr. Who love. I am now beyond thoroughly indoctrinated. I want a TARDIS, but only if it comes with the Doctor. Especially if it comes with the Doctor. I laughed, I cried great heaving sobs, it was brilliant. I can't wait to see more.

[livejournal.com profile] hiyacynth was a lovely hostess. Wow I love fangirl weekends, there's so much to talk and laugh and squee about. I love my fangirls so much. love love lovelovelove

Today was my first day of law school. The lecture went well. It was Contracts and the professor was an engaging lecturer. My panic is slowly dwindling though the overwhelmed feeling is still firmly in place. However, on the way to the bus this morning I stepped into a hole (a real, literal hole, I think a gopher dug it) and sprained my ankle. It's a pretty bad sprain, so bad that the doctor hardly even touched it before ordering an x-ray, but a sprain is all it is. I look pretty funny hobbling around on a cane but should hopefully be much improved in a few days.

There's some sort of irony in this. If I weren't so stubborn I'd think the universe was conspiring to keep me out of law school but the universe knows well and good that now I'll keep going just to spite it. I'm nothing if not petty and willful. =D

Over at SciFi.com they've started posting the webisodes. I think this link should take you to the first one. It is so very cool. Why isn't it October yet?

OK, have to toddle off and do some more studying. I will leave you with two thoughts: 1) No one angsts like Jensen Ackles, as exemplified on 'The Berrisford Agenda' last night, and 2) Ron Livingston's new show premieres tonight with Gina Torres. If I die of teh pretty you'll know why.

Am in the process of writing up my recap of road-trip and camping with the family. In the meantime, seeing as the authors have been unveiled over at Multiverse 2006, here is my story. It's a Firefly/BSG crossover featuring two characters who are wicked fun to play with. Read and enjoy.

No wonder it's called the Pit of Voles. *stabs FF.net*

I come bearing new Battlestar Galactica fic:

Title: Every Precious Seed
Disclaimer: Ron Moore owns it all, I've just borrowed his toys for a while.
Warning: Spoilers for the season 2 finale (Lay Your Burdens Down, Pt. 2) are rampant. Do not read if you don't want to know.

Found unlocked off-site here for linking and the like.

HOW CAN THERE BE NO NEW EPISODES TILL OCTOBER!!!!!???
liptonrm_backup: (Default)
Apparently LJ is going down for maintenance 10 tonight and I think that's PST because that's where the main thingamabobs are, I think. Figured I should get a post in now or lose my chance forever, or some such.

But, don't worry, there can't be another Great LJ Blackout because there is no Fangirl Holiday also occuring so we should all be spared the horror of losing our link with the outside world. That was crazy times, wasn't it? =D

Hour and a half BSG season finale tonight! W00t!!!!!! I am all sorts of excited, it's all I can think about, mostly. I hear that the new season won't start until October and that it might be moving to NBC. Waiting till October majorly sucks but it will give everybody a chance to catch up and moving to NBC could be a win-win situation for everyone.

Am feeling kinda trapped. This probably means I should get out and find some stupid part-time job or something, anything but I'm also lazy. These are not a good combination.

My grandma had bowel surgery earlier this week and according to all accounts she is doing fine. The Da, my brothers and I are going to see her tomorrow. The Mum will not be joining us because she hasn't talked to her husband's mother in nearly 20 year. Don't worry, she's equal opportunity, she hasn't talked to her family for nearly 15. Oh the drama.

You should all go out and buy the latest issue of GQ. It's only $4 (US) and has Matthew Fox on a motorcycle. The media doesn't always fail me. mmmmmmmmmm

Oy, I need a cut and color something fierce.

ETA: I saw some Logan & Weevil picspam and now I am d-loading Veronica Mars because I have to know what they are doing and why they are so hot. I'm a shallow, shallow girl.
