I have been extremely stressed out for the better part of the past six months. It's pretty much sucked. But it looks like things are at least becoming a little less stressful. *crosses fingers* Therefore I hope to be on the internet a little bet more. I've even *gsp* started writing again.

Anyway, just thought I'd check in. And also point you towards a tumblr where someone takes pictures of an Angel standee "doing" things. Angel Does Stuff. It's kind of hilarious.

Wow, I have a lot of pages bookmarked to share with you all. So let's weed through the stack a little bit.

5 Reasons Pop Culture is Run by Fan-Fiction - For an article that starts off making fun of fanfic it turns around to give one of the best defenses of it that I've ever read, including arguments that I've made (at least to myself) on more than one occasion. Who'd've thunk it from Cracked.com?

We've all probably seen the new Wonder Woman costume by now. I don't hate it, necessarily, but, wow, that's a lot of funny looking photoshop. I mean, just look at what they've done to poor Ms. Palicki's pelvis. That's just not natural.

A little entertainment trade news: This guy is up for the top job at the CW after Dawn Ostroff leaves at the end of the current television season; Eliza Dushku has been cast in a comedy pilot for CBS and Tony Head has been cast in one for NBC.

To cap it all of, here's an entertainming medley of songs from The Simpsons (oh this brings back memories...):

I frigging swear, this whole applying to the bar thing is going to give me an ulcer, if it hasn't already. Right now they're breathing down my neck to get them information over which I have little to no control. I sent the records requests to the appropriate authorities and now we all just have to wait until those requests are filled. There's nothing any of us can do about it.

Ugh, don't they know they're making it difficult for me to fall asleep at night? Regardless of how many times I tell my brain that there's nothing we can do it still insists on running in circles and worrying about every possible thing that might have gone wrong. Chill, brain! There's nothing we can do! Go to sleep!

Bleh, how about some random links? The internet is, after all, our friend.

* Something that will make even the worst day seem better, Kermit the Frog on Reading Rainbow [OMG I LOVED THIS BIT AS A KID OMG]:

* Ewan McGregor riding a bike. Wearing a newsboy cap. With puppy. OMG ded of cute.

* There was a Super-Moon this weekend and nobody told me about it until after the fact? But, wow, those photos are amazing.

* NASA has a site entirely dedicated to women researchers and astronauts. I think I'm in love. Why yes, I wanted to be an astronaut when I was a kid, why do you ask?

Lately I've been spamming Baylor and Dodger with all of the random things I find on the internet. I eventually realized that I could spam the rest of you with them, too. That is, after all, what livejournal is for.

Strangely, a lot of these are trailers. I will endeavour to not clog up your f-lists.

* I love Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Like, really, a lot. Here they are re-enacting a scene from Star Wars.

Relatedly, the scene from Spaced where Simon Pegg's character rants about The Phantom Menace.

* The trailer for Super 8, JJ Abrams and Steven Spielberg's new movie that looks like E.T. meets Predator

Super 8 Trailer )

* The trailer for Super starring Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Kevin Bacon, and Nathan Fillion. Frankly, it looks kind of awesome.

Super Trailer )

* The Alley Dance from the 1955 movie My Sister Eileen featuring Bob Fosse and Tommy Rall. I watched it and thought "Someone should make a J2 AU out of this."

* Disney Princesses as the Seven Deadly Sins

* Batman hates you.

* This family tree of King Charles II of Spain is one of the most disburbing things I've ever seen. Whole lots of uncles marrying nieces and close cousins marrying each other. The wikipedia entry says that the Charles II's genome was more homozygous than that of people whose parents were siblings. It's like that episode of The X-Files but in real life.

* Now, to wipe that taste out of your brains, An interview with Paula Smith the woman who coined the term 'Mary Sue'. It's a fascinating interview and it offers a lot of great history and perspective on fandom as a whole.

* In sum: Someone needs to buy me a Huntress t-shirt like, yesterday.

Stupid rundown, achey day. Fie, I say, FIE!

Hey, you know what opens today? The first half of the last Harry Potter movie EVAR (until they inevitably reboot it in five years, give or take). I think we should have a Harry Potter party.

So, I'm going to post a bunch of recs and stuff and then you comment with your favorite Harry Potter stuff, or talk about your favorite characters or scenes or ANYTHING YOU WANT because this is a free, semi-anarchic conglomeration of likeminded people and HARRY POTTER IS AWESOME.

Also, over the years I've forgotten where a lot of the good Harry Potter fic is that I enjoyed and I've never been able to find all that many vids so REC ME YOUR FAVORITES AND I WILL REC YOU MINE.

First, if you haven't been reading Mark Reads Harry Potter then you need to hie yourself over and check that shit out. Because there's nothing more awesome than watching someone go from skeptic to full on geek fanboy. The fact that he's an interesting writer with good things to say is just icing.

There are a BUNCH of fics that I have lost over the years, but there are a few that I can still track down. These include:

Stealing Harry by [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge
Wolf's Moon by Cuthalion
Burrowing - A Simple Case of the Normal, Human Flu by [livejournal.com profile] dodger_sister
And because self-reccing is TOTALLY ALLOWED All Stories End by [livejournal.com profile] liptonrm

Please, you guys, I know there are a bunch more HP fics that I enjoyed so REC ME YOUR FAVORITES (by you or someone else). PLZKTHNX

Here's an AWESOME VID by [personal profile] lim:

Snakes on a Plane by [livejournal.com profile] dualbunny is also TOO AWESOME FOR WORDS and if I could find an embed I would totally put it up, yo.

And an AWESOME TRAILER:

So let's have a HARRY POTTER PARTY!!!!! Bring me your gifs, your meta, your favorite fics yearning to breathe free!

BOBBBBBBBYYYYYYYY!!!!!!

That was awesome. Bobby's awesome. Best.Episode.Yet.

Also, semi-relatedly, have ya'll seen Hi, I'm Twilight and I'm True Blood? 'Cause you should. It's lolarious.

In other news, my car broke down on the way back from FGC last night. Why oh why don't I have a Bobby who could come over and fix my car and be all grumpy at me? Stupid, inconvenient real life being all real and stuff.

Next SNL should do Dean Winchester's Guide to Picking Up Angels. It would be awesome.

I'm not a huge Dark Tower fan but what I just read over at Deadline.com is so awesome that it literally stole my breath. Ron Howard, Akiva Goldsman, and NBC Universal are going to tell Steven King's ginormous epic in both feature film and TV formats. They're going to do three films. They'll start with one and then use a season of TV to bridge to the next film.

OMG WHAT AN AWESOME IDEA!!!!! That way you get to see all of the really awesome big culminative scenes on the movie screen and you still get all of that time to deal with the character work on the small screen. If they pull this off then just think of all of the other books that could benefit from the same kind of treatment! And not just books! OMG, this is so much more exciting than 3D technology, this is a new kind of visual storytelling!

Yeah, so, if you can't tell, I think this is really frigging exciting. I mean, I probably would've ended up watching a Dark Tower movie because it's genre and I'm easy, but now I'm really excited to see what they do with it and how they handle the new format. If they pull it off it really will be the best of both worlds.

Which is not to say that every TV show/movie should get this kind of treatment. But, still, it's a genius idea and I really hope it works out for everybody involved, especially us fans.

What to say, what to say ...

Well, in the past week I've posted a Big Bang, successfully interviewed for an externship, and got a part-time job at Panera which I start tomorrow. I've also had a variety of story ideas, both fan and original (I'm still kicking around that post-apocalypse fantasy idea, now with bonus female characters, and knowing me it'll take me another decade to even start writing it).

I have also seen things like the season premiere of Mad Men and the episode of Leverage with Alona Tal. I am intrigued by Mad Men (more Peggy and Joan!) and Leverage left me asking the question, yet again, "how so incestuous CW?" Also, I don't know how fandom is falling down on Christian Kane/Alona Tal pairings (with bonus Aldis Hodge, of course) a week after that episode aired. But then, fandom is tricksy like that.

And I've been watching things on the internet. If you haven't seen that infamous Old Spice ad The Man Your Man Could Smell Like I highly suggest you watch it now. And then you have to watch the pitch-perfect parody New Spice- Study Like a Scholar, Scholar

You also have to watch Jane Austen's Fight Club because it is too awesome for words. And, hey, did you hear that Marvel vs. DC guy did Hi I'm Twilight and I'm True Blood. I love you internetz! When you're clever you're so super, super smrt!

Hey, did you all hear about how Joshua Jackson set up shop outside of Comic-Con and held Pacey-Con where he read his own Dawson's Creek fanfic and signed autographs, all while playing that Paula Cole song on a boombox? Well, if not, then you should totally check out the photographic evidence. I think I kind of love him.

Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes! I appreciate them more than I can say.

I've been very busy this week working on a vidding project. I want to have the rough draft done before the FGC shindig this weekend (we're going to have a [personal profile] hiyacynth!) so all of my time has been focused on getting that done. I have about 50 more seconds to go, which I hope to finish this evening, leaving later tonight and tomorrow to doing my RL homework. It's always annoying when RL takes time away from fannish activities.

Went to see Iron Man 2 yesterday with [livejournal.com profile] dodger_sister. It was fun. We were almost the only people in the theater so we let ourselves be a little more ... vocal then usual. At one point we simultaneously leaned to each other and whispered "Drunken billionaire" in spontaneous unison. She was referencing Batman Begins while I was referencing something else, but we were both on the same wavelength. It's a fun movie and we had a good time and I'm not sure who I loved more, Rhodey or Agent Coulson.

Relatedly, [livejournal.com profile] dodger_sister says that Thor is a pussy. I'll have to take her word for it as I have only the generalest of knowledge concerning Thor-as-Marvel-superhero.

After the movie I stuck around FGC and watched Tuesday's Glee. It was Lady Gaga-inspired so, yeah, I kind of had to see it. It's not a secret that I kind of love her. The episode was okay, the costumes were excellent, though the production on the Bad Romance number was a little, I don't know, mediocre. The vocals were fine but I just didn't like the camerawork or the editing.

LOL, I amuse myself when I get so deep and critical of things like direction on a show like Glee. Anyway, have links to some awesome Lady Gaga vids that YouTube won't let me embed: Bad Romance, Paparazzi and its continuation Telephone. So there you go.

ETA: Dude, I can embed! Tricksy YouTube. I'm a freak bitch, baby )

Which reminds me, the guys over at Project Rungay are doing a fantastic analysis of the fashion of Mad Men as a lead up to the beginning of season four. Not only is it a great look at retro fashion, its also a stellar analysis of how wardrobe is used in television/movies to create characters and moments. If you like fashion or film production even a little you should definitely check it out.

Okay, back to vidding. It's a hard job but somebody has to do it. *snerk*

Did you all know that I got some really awesome holiday cards from [livejournal.com profile] auntimeesh and [livejournal.com profile] shanghai_jim? Well, I did, and they are beautiful. [livejournal.com profile] shanghai_jim's has the most adorable penguin on it and [livejournal.com profile] auntiemeesh made the card herself, OMG! You are most talented, my friend. And thank you both, I love them.

For some reason my brain has been "all pop music all the time" the past couple of days. It probably has a little something to do with watching/listening to this on repeat. I am awed and amazed that this DJ Earworm guy is able to make an actual song out of Billboard's Top 25 for the year. A pretty friggin' good song, too.

I know people give pop music a lot of grief, but sometimes it's exactly what I want to listen to. My brain just loves music, the genre doesn't seem to matter.

Also, all thanks to [livejournal.com profile] buffyaddict13's recent enthusiastic discovery, I've been rewatching Band of Brothers. Easy Company just never goes out of style, you know? My DVD is currently paused at the beginning of 'The Last Patrol' because I needed a break after 'The Breaking Point'. I'm always impressed at how much I find every time I rewatch, even when I thought I knew all there was to know. That's some damn good television right there.

I should probably get back to work. [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang sign-ups are coming soon and I need to be ready.

Brain has been in switch-off mode for most of last night and today. Sometimes that's just what the doctor ordered.

Marathoned three more episodes of The Wire season two and fell even more in love with the show. I just, yes, yes, a million times yes. I love it when storytellers really, really get something right.

Speaking of, here's a great interview/conversation with Andre Royo (Bubs) about the difficulties in truly representing the lives and experiences of the homeless.

Then I tried to watch V and had to turn it off about 3/4s of the way in. They got to this part where they started making this very clear political statement and I was just done. I don't have the patience to deal with shows that feel like they have to preach at me. However, was very amused to notice a number of good ol' Vancouver locations. Though, surprisingly enough, the Asylum was not among them.

Also, stumbled over surprise!incest in a book I was reading. Actually, it wasn't really surprising because I've read that series of books I don't know how many times since high school. But, I don't know, maybe I was reading the text more closely this time because the vast quantities of incestuous relationships suddenly jumped out at me. I felt a deep need to scrub it all out of my brain. And then I started thinking about all of the other incestuous relationships I've seen in books and came up with a fair number of them (not counting Flowers in the Attic).

So, ummmmm, yeah. It's a good reminder that fandom isn't the only place where such things are de rigueur. Sometimes it's hard to keep perspective when we spend so much time in the deep end of the fandom pool. Or, in other words, fandom has not cornered the market on fucked-uppedness.

I can't stop watching Lady Gaga's Bad Romance video. I've never even seen her or purposefully listened to her music before today but there's something so fascinating about this video. I don't even know.

All right, then. Carry about your business.

I kind of love Joe Biden. Trufax.

Which reminds me, this crazy SPN idea popped into my head one day. So, the ghost of Warren G. Harding (or some random president like that) is wreaking havoc in the White House (and by "havoc" I mean stealing soaps from the Lincoln Bedroom and making Malia cry, the bastard). Cue Rahm Emmanuel calling John Winchester's cell phone (because of course Rahm has the number) and getting the boys instead. Sam&Dean head out to the DC and hunt the ghost blah blah blah. And there would be a running gag about how Rahm needed to keep quiet about the ghosthunting because they didn't want Joe Biden to know because Joe has been threatening to call his "expert" and everyone's kind of nervous about who that expert might be.

Of course, the expert would turn out to be Bobby or someone like that, because Joe Biden is nobody's fool.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] baylorsr and I like to talk about Joe Biden's crowbar (named 'The Biden') and how people have to keep restraining him from using it to cram health care reform up the Senate's ass. And Rahm is standing by to let loose on the House if only the President would give the word.

Because it's about time that the Dems stopped worrying about getting bipartisan support on Health Care Reform and just started FDR'ing this bitch up.

You know, I really need an icon that says 'FDR this Bitch Up.' That would be awesome.

I've been very busy this morning. No, I haven't been doing law school work, I've been making Lazarus Get Over Here icons. Just cause.

Get over here right now, mister! )

Enjoy!

Once upon a time in the long ago, mythical era known as the Great Blizzard of 2009 I was snowed in at FGC. During this magical time [livejournal.com profile] baylorsr and I alternated between watching Animal Cops: Detroit and driving the Baylor Sister crazy with an imaginary Disney boy band. We devoted large swathes of time to composing said band and filling it with CW RPF characters wherein we created a love story that would play out between boy bander!Jensen and Mousketeer!Jared.

Sometimes you just need to let your inner pre-teen out and let her squee, you know?

Well, somehow we were able to convince [livejournal.com profile] allamboy to write it for us and post it over at [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang. We're always able to talk Jason into writing all of our ultra!crazy things for us, he's kind of awesome like that. And now you can read it too.

Drum roll, please.

Now presenting Live & On Stage. *cymbals clash* If you're in the mood for adorable schmoop and fangirl crazy (and who ever isn't?) you should definitely go read it. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by what you find.

OMG 5X EVERYTHING I LUV U!!!!!

So, once upon a time I was writing a story in which reference was made to the 'Bobby Singer School of Library Science.' I was so taken with the cleverness of me that I said to myself "Self, wouldn't it be great if we could buy a t-shirt with that exact logo on it?" At which point I chortled and went on with writing my story.

Well, the idea kept on popping up at the strangest times. So finally I decided to do something about it. And after a few days of poking at the design with my novice graphic art skills, I can finally announce the opening of the Bobby Singer School of Library Science Store over at Cafepress. Cause if I'm going to make a t-shirt for myself I might as well slap it on as many products as possible and release it into the fandom wilds.

Yeah, I think I'm pretty adorable. ;-)

Oh, the Latin phrase means 'precipice in front, wolves behind (between a rock and a hard place).' Though I almost went with 'lege atque lacrima (read 'em and weep)' or 'vir prudens non contra ventum mingit (a wise man does not urinate against the wind).' 'Noli nothis permittere te terere (don't let the bastards get you down)' also has a nice ring to it. Now let us all thank [livejournal.com profile] baylorsr for so fully and excellently answering the random 'OMG what should the motto be?' email I sent her this morning.

There you go. I have once again proven that I am a ginormous dork and I love every minute of it. Also, if I put even a portion of this kind of industry into actual work I'd be the most successful law student ever. Trufax.
liptonrm_backup: (Default)
You should all run out right the fuck now and see Snakes on a Plane. Yes, it is just that awesome. Best movie I've seen all summer, hands down.

Unless, of course, you're mortally terrified of snakes and, like my mother, had to remove even the picture of one in a dictionary for fear of freaking the fuck out. If you feel that way then you definitely shouldn't see this movie because there are lots and lots of snakes doing snake-like things.

Everyone else should go and see this because it's just as cool as Samuel L. Jackson says it is. If The Man tells you to do something then you'd better fucking do it, if you want to live.

I am so damn tired and weird today. Last night, like the genius I am, I took a claritin right before going to bed. Said claritin kept me up well into the wee hours until I broke down and took a sleeping pill. Said sleeping pill made it nearly impossible to get out of bed this morning thereby causing me to be late to work. I just took an excedrin and three aspirin in hopes of destroying the headache that is itching around my temples. No one can ever say that I'm not well-medicated. ;-)

I watched Dark Angel on SciFi last night. Yes, I watched it because of Jensen Ackles, I am not ashamed of this (I've tried to watch Gilmore Girls for Jared Padalecki but I just can't get into that show, it's annoying and talky, bleh). Dark Angel's not so bad. Max is kind of a wannabe Buffy, complete with emo-ridden OTP ship but Jessica Alba doesn't bring as much to Max as Sarah Michelle Gellar brought to Buffy. The Ackles is wonderfully charming, I'm sure I would've fangirled him back in the day if I'd been watching; talent, brains, and beauty are a deadly combination. I will now physically restrain myself from waxing rhapsodic because ya'll really don't need that. Now I need to go watch 'Devil's Trap' again because, wow, can that guy act.

I feel like there are a million and one things I should be doing but have forgotten to do. I've also had the same song stuck in my head for weeks. Dar Williams' 'Mercy of the Fallen' keeps popping into my head at random times. I'm sure Freud would be happy to tell me why that is but we all know what kind of a sex-obsessed perv ol' Siggy was so I think I'll leave it alone until the humming gets on my nerves. *wink*
liptonrm_backup: (Default)
So, got to work this morning and thought, a la Dante from Clerks, 'But I'm not even supposed to be here today'. Except, I totally am. Is vaguely depressing.

So, to combat the blue-ish day your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to distract me with shiny things. These can be stories, pictures, music, crazy ideas that entertain, anything. Bonus points and brownies will go to all who play.

You think I'm kidding about the brownies? I'm serious, I will really send you brownies, if you so desire. *bribesbribesbribes*
