All right, now on to less frustrating things. A couple months ago [livejournal.com profile] dodger_sister had a dream that, when she recounted it the next day, we all thought it would make a delightful story. I have the privilege of being the only one off my rocker enough to attempt to tell it. I think I'm going to try this whole "posting things as a WIP" for a while so here's the first part.

This doesn't have a title yet, the name on the draft is Codename: Hotass. It involves Victor Henricksen as a P.I., Dand Scully as a Professor/Forensic Scientist at a local college, and Dean Winchester and Calvin Reid as police detectives. I'm sure you can all guess why it's called Hotass. =D

He'd always been a sucker for a bad luck case, for the people whose lives got lost between the cracks in the system. )

The following are the first batch of Belated More Joy Day clips. But, first, a question.

As I sink deeper and deeper into the vidding hole I'm discovering certain disappointments with the technology at my disposal. And I'm not quite sure who to ask, or trust, when it comes to inexpensive programs (though I trust the flist implicitly in these matters). My initial query is: what is the best way to get video off of a dvd? My computer didn't come equipped with a dvd ripper (though it does have a burner) and I'm, frankly, stumped at how to get high quality footage from one place to another.

Any help or direction ya'll can give will be greatly appreciated.

And now, the clips:

LotR:FotR - A Wizard Is Never Late, Frodo Baggins )

The Unnatural - Shut Up, Mulder, I'm Playing Baseball )

Route 666 - You Told Her? )

The clipping offer is still open, so request to your heart's content.

Phew, made it in just under the wire for Sam's birthday. It's good to have demanding friends who tell you to stop being lazy. =D

Title: Let Him Do What Seemeth Him Good
Fandom: Supernatural with a slight X-Files crossover
Disclaimer: I own absolutely nothing. It’s all Kripke’s and the CW’s and blah, blah, blah. We all know who the real braintrust is around here.
Rating: PG-13 at very worst
Spoilers: General for the series. Takes place in between ‘Crossroad Blues’ and ‘Croatoan’.
Summary: Sam hears whispers of a faith healer in rural Alabama.

( Something was stealing children from their beds and leaving them buried in the soft river mud and he was prepared to say whatever it took to uncover the secrets that this town, like all the others he’d ever lived in, held close to its chest )

I've been sitting on this bit of meta for quite a while and now seems like as good as any time to finally put my words down into some sort of physical form. Enjoy.

I wish I had never worked up my nerve to go into the comic book store because now I'm going to spend every cent I own in there. Dammit.

This is all to say that I picked up the first Sandman trade on Wednesday and loved it just as much as I've always thought I would. And there were so many other interesting looking books in there. Plus I hear Marvel did a whole Civil War series? I'm not a big Marvel fan but I would totally buy those because it's just the sort of crack that I can't avoid.

When the hell did I become Seth Cohen? *grumps*

[livejournal.com profile] baylorsr and I discussed it last night and we're not allowed to talk about the possibility that Supernatural will be cancelled because we'll end up sitting on the floor rocking back and forth. So if you want to save the both of us from insanity you must go over to Kristin's E!Online Save One Show poll and vote for Supernatural. Do it because you think the show deserves it or do it to preserve the mental health of fangirls like you but please, please, please vote. The network execs take this into consideration when they're making their decisions (as exemplified by One Tree Hill's survival last season).

One of the X-Files episodes we marathoned through last night was 'Die Hand Die Verlezt' and I think that was the first XF episode Kim Manners ever directed. That, of course, makes all the little homages in 'Scarecrow' that much more entertaining. Also, the evil!Aunt from 'Scarecrow' was one of the devil-worshipping teachers in 'Die Hand Die Verlezt.' I love Vancouver.

Apparently I'm watching a lot of second seasons at the moment (SPN, XF, BtVS). One of the things I've noticed is how much more pedestrian Buffy's direction is when compared to XF and SPN. Obvious SPN lucked out when a lot of the old XF talent came on board from the very beginning but it makes me wonder about Buffy. Was it just that Whedon didn't have the good fortune of knowing a great director when he began or was it because it was harder to find good talent at a reasonable price at that time in LA? Either way, it's only an interesting observation.

I think I will end with a quote:

"For if this Nation is to remain true to the ideals symbolized by its flag, it must not wield the tools of tyrants even to resist an assault by the forces of tyranny."
- Rumsfeld v. Padilla (dissent written by Justice Stevens and joined by Justices Souter, Ginsberg and Breyer)

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

And I am neither wearing green nor drinking. My Irish ancestors are ... well, they probably don't really care one way or another. And the Red Wings shirt was on the top of the stack in the drawer. Can't go out of order, after all.

Bought new tennis shoes. They are cute. I will now be able to allow my old, beat up, treadless shoes the honorable retirement they so richly deserve.

Fandom, did you know that Jeffrey Dean Morgan was on a season three episode of Angel and that he Spoilers )

And then we watched that X-Files episode with the haunted nursing home. At the end of the episode the ghosts just kind of magically disappear for no real reason and it was determined that, obviously, John Winchester had to come by afterwards and finish cleaning up the mess that was left behind. It wasn't Mulder and Scully's fault that they didn't know how to properly put the spirits to rest with a good salt and burn, but the job's gotta get down, irregardless.

Speaking of, very much enjoyed Supernatural on Thursday. It was a solid MotW that played with PoV in a fun way and had great acting across the board. Am really looking forward to next week's episode because ... Spoilery Spec )

The crockpot meal I made this week was less then enjoyable. Robin Miller recipes are two for two in the 'tastes bad' column. Looks like I'll be steering clear of her stuff from now on. ETA: Yeah, I think it just made my dog vomit. Word to the wise, go out and buy an actual slowcooker cookbook, don't trust whatever recipes you might find at foodnetwork.com.

I feel so creatively tapped out. I keep on trying to plot out stories and ideas in my head and they peter out before I get very far. Bleh. Stupid law school.

I feel a need to talk about my two favorite things, TV and books. Yeap, no big surprises there.

Last night we finally got to '3' and 'One Breath' in the FGC re-watch of The X-Files. Unsurprisingly, 'One Breath' left us all a weepy mess. I simply can't comprehend how there is a rising generation of fannish-ly minded people who quite possibly have never seen The X-Files. When that show was at the top of its game it soared. Then we watched some Supernatural ('Nightmare', to be exact) and afterwards one of us (I name no names) may have gotten up to hug the television set and tell it how much we loved it.

I do, I love TV. People watch it for different reasons, some for mindless entertainment; others for the chance to become inextricably tied up in the story being told. For me when a television show is at the top of its game I'm completely caught up in what is going on, the characters are as real to me as the members of my own family and their trials and triumphs are as compelling as my own. It's hard to create a great television show and even harder to sustain it, as all fans unfortunately know. We've all watched favorite shows stumble and fall under their own weight but during their heyday they inspired creativity and curiosity and love in a way that is unique and irreplaceable.

Great television is about story and character, about action and emotion, about escape and commitment. I love TV and I'm not ashamed to say it.

Actually, it would probably be more correct to say that I love stories and television is one of the mediums used to in which great stories are told. This week I bought Guy Gavriel Kay's newest novel, Ysabel and was reminded, though I've never forgotten, that my love for the written transmission of stories is as great, or quite possibly greater, then my love for their visual transmission. Kay is one of my favorite authors, even his lesser works are of highest quality and eminently satisfying and when he is at the top of his game I'm routinely rendered tearful and speechless. He's one of the small category of potent post-Tolkien fantasists (a list that includes DeLint, Gaiman, Cooper, McKinley and LeGuin, amongst others) who instead of mechanically apeing Tolkien's style went beyond form to the root of the power of fantasy as a medium for rich storytelling and captured it to tell his own stories.

There are reasons why the oldest stories are always being retold in new contexts, why ancient myth is still as revealing today as it was 3000 years ago. We recognize and rejoice in it because the old stories are also our stories, our lives because time may move inexorably onward but the core of what makes us human is the same today as it was in the very beginning. Different forms of storytelling speak to us in different ways, the tropes and metaphors of fantasy are what do it for me where the structures of chicklit or regular fiction or non-fiction do it for others but in the end it all comes back down to the story and how it engrosses us and reflects a piece of our souls in new and familiar ways.

Stories are important because life is important and the beauty and desolation of it should always be extolled.

Feeling much better today. Thank you all so much for your good wishes and offers of hobbits and paratroopers and things, they were much, much, much appreciated. That and a certain 15-page treatise on Gibson Praise made me smile and giggle and laugh out loud. Wow, the good old days of X-Files show and fandom with the shippers and the no-romos and the UST and RST and casefiles and fluffy, fluffy het and the slash that I never read because Mulder/Scully, whether they're romantic or not is my original and only OTP but Krycek can have flings with anyone and everyone.

And if you go over here there's a way to view a sooper sekrit trailer for the second season of Lost that doesn't spoil anything and doesn't show a whole lot but will have my brain fuming and foaming all summer.

It's funny how some of my older friends see me as this big spoiler whore when it's mostly situational prostitution. I avoid spoilers for Lost and Serenity and Battlestar Galatica and Veronica Mars like the plague because I either already know that those are quality programs and am enjoying watching the mystery unfold or I hear they're quality programs and want to enjoy them as much as I possibly can when I actually get my hot little hands on them. However when it comes to things like Ep. III or Buffy Season 7 I'm all, "Spoil me up, bitch." because I honestly don't give a crap anymore. That's just the way it is.

Things are really going to be okay, they really will be. And if worse comes to worse I'll just jump in the GTO with Casey and Zeke and head on down to Mexico. =D

Word Origin of the Day: Hunch - Although the origins are unknown, this word first appeared in English in the 1500s. At that point, it was a verb meaning "to push" or "to shove," which also inspired the compound form "hunchback." The current meaning, which arose early in the twentieth century, probably alludes to the slight push that might accompany a hint or clue coming from another person.

Had a most uneventful weekend. Did spend a bit of time running to and from my parents' house but besides that I got some good tv viewage in. I caught the new Kim Possible movie on the Disney Channel and, since I am apaprently all of 14 years old, enjoyed it quite a bit. That very night I also watched the last half of G.I. Jane which is not as bad as I thought it would be. I did not know it was directed by Ridley Scott. See, you can even learn stuff from Demi Moore movies.

I watched three more episodes of season one X-Files: Genderbender, Lazarus and Young at Heart. Somehow I had never seen Genderbender before and was not only impressed by how very Forever Knight the production values were but was also suprised by the appearance of Nicholas Lea as an almost victim of the killer. This was either a casting faux pas or already the Consortium had their eyes on Mulder and Scully and sent Krycek to spy on them. Unfortunately he decided to go to a club while they were up playing with the faux!Amish and was used and abused by the bad guy du jour. Poor widdle Alex.

Speaking of Mulder, David Duchovny was on Inside the Actors Studio on Sunday and I have a tape of it. I didn't watch much, only enough to see that Mr. Duchovny is still as smokingly hot as he's always been. *sigh*

Have begun a new knitting project. We'll see how it turns out. I'm flying from the seat of my pants here, as I can't seem to get the hang of learning from the diagrams in books so the project is mostly me going, 'Hmmm, I wonder how it would turn out if I did this'. We'll see how it goes.

I feel like I should have something profound to say but I've got nothin'. My profundity seems to have slowly seeped from my mind. I blame reality tv, personally.

ETA: Ah ha! It just came to me. I wanted to talk about books!

I Like Books )

It is so gorgeous outside that I can hardly believe it's real. The sun is shining, the air is warm and the day is perfectly beautiful. The only things that would make this better are leaves on the trees and not being at work.

I watched 'Beyond the Sea' from season one X-Files last night. Wow. I'd forgotten what an amazing episode it is. Brad Dourif sent chills down my back and Gillian Anderson owned every scene she was in. I was completely and utterly captivated. mmmmmmmmmm I <3 Scully.

I have heard that in a recent episode of that new Law & Order show Joe Toye is shown wearing a newsie cap. Oh.My.Gosh. I need screencaps and pictures, stat.

I also popped my latest Netflix rental into the dvd player last night. It was Woman of the Year starring Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy and it's a fascinating film. As a modern woman I don't completely agree with all of the sexual messages of the film, but then again it's extremely progressive for its time. The script is layered full of character and social observation and it more then deserved the Oscar for that year. I'd never seen a Hepburn/Tracy film before and am now completely won over by the two of them. Wow. What actors, what chemistry. It's a good flick and one that I'll be mulling over for quite a while.

For anyone who's interested, here's a list of the next 20 movies currently residing in my Netflix queue.

The List )

Baylor plays MSU in the women's NCAA basketball championship tonight. This amuses me.

Oh no, the president of the company is hanging around today! I'd better clean up my act and at least pretend to be working.

My bladder is floating away on a sea of cola. I've had so much soda to drink today it's not even funny. However, the only thing I actually regret are the peanut M&Ms. They're tricksy little buggers, I always eat more then I plan. But they're soooooooo yummy.

Got home from work last night, fell asleep and slept right through until my alarm went off this morning. It was hella crazy. Hold it, I lie. I was awake for long enough to finish watching Ice, the eigth episode of the X-Files season one. Boy howdy does that episode mark the beginning of MSR. Wow, Mulder and Scully had some fun chemistry before that but the scene with Scully confronting Mulder and him saying "I want to trust you." was just ... wow. It foreshadowed so much of the shippy goodness that was to come.

My shoulder hurts. I think Doc Roe needs to stop by and make it all better.

Am very tired of the cold. It can be spring now, please.

Am also very tired of how cold it is in my office. This building doesn't seem to have any sort of good heating. My hands would like to be warm again sometime in the next decade, please.

Yesterday was ... interesting. Heard some news when I got into work in the morning that had me feeling contemplative and solemn for the rest of the day. I'm still not quite able to process what I was feeling into words, so all I'll say is that it's amazing how one life can touch the lives of so many other people and how valued that one life can be by both strangers and friends.

Then, at the end of the day I got some great news. I was able to go pick up my car from the body shop. It was fixed and new-seeming and shiny and it runs better now then it did before the accident. I'm ecstatic to be my own transportation again. I've had a lot of help in the past week from people who were more then willing to ferry me to and from work and for that I am extremely grateful.

I refuse to think about how grateful my credit card company and my local municipality are to me. They are both going to make quite a bit of money out of my momentary blindness.

I came home to find my shiny new copy of The X-Files season one by my door. It was on sale at Amazon.com for $35 and even though I shouldn't have even spent that much money I couldn't resist such an amazing deal. Am very much looking forward to popping that in the dvd player, once I finish watching the episodes of Farscape season one from that shiny new dvd that was purcahsed a few weeks ago.

brrr *shiver*
