That's right! I promised a recounting of Halloween!

In short: We scared little kids. It was awesome.

At length: We've been planning for Halloween all year. We decided that we all needed long black robes so that we could be grim reaper-type ghouls. We commissioned my mom to make them for us (we bought all of the supplies, of course).

The Halloween stage was set on the first day of October. [livejournal.com profile] baylorsr turned the frontyard into a cemetary, complete with styrofoam headstones and glowing skeletons (one a zombie, the other a pirate). This year we added a bat that hangs off of the big tree; it lights up, swings back and forth, and makes spooky bat noises. There is also a witch that hangs on the door. She's motion-activated and cackles whenever anyone opens or closes the door. Of all of the decorations she's the one who has scared the most children (including the Baylor Nephew in years past). [Our resident ghost used to be fascinated with the witch, triggering it to go off at strange and random times.]

On the night itself we put on our robes and painted our faces bone white with black around our eyes and mouths. Then [livejournal.com profile] dodger_sister and I stood in the big picture window, all of the lights off behind us, with only flashlights to illuminate our faces. [livejournal.com profile] baylorsr silently and expressionlessly passed out the candy. In the background we were playing one of those spooky noise tracts on a loop.

A number of kids stood on the sidewalk, staring at the house, trying to gather up the nerve to come up to the door. One little kid dressed as Michael Myers got his candy and then suddenly noticed us standing in the window. He walked backwards all the way to the street, staring at us the whole way. One girl came up with a whole gaggle of kids and then squealed and jumped upon seeing us. We could hear her pointing us out to the other kids as she walked away. I spooked out another kid by staring at him the entire time. Another girl couldn't tell if we were real people or holograms so I pointed at her. She shrieked a little, it was awesome.

Lots of parents took pictures of the house and talked about us while their kids were getting candy. Our zombie costumes were the talk of the neighborhood last year and I bet this year won't be any different.

The two or so hours of trick-or-treating seemed to fly by. Our only disappointment was the lower than expected number of kids. I guess that's what happens when Halloween is on a Monday.

[livejournal.com profile] dodger_sister has some great photos of the decorations in the yard over here. I'll be sure to put up a shot of us in full costume when I get my hands on them.

Yay! Scaring little kids is the greatest!

Happy Day After Halloween!

I just bought a bunch of half price Halloween candy at the supermarket. Reese's Peanut Butter cups for everybody!

Spent a very good Halloween last night. Debuted my new witch costume. I revamped an old graduation robe and donned a cool hat I found at JoAnn Fabrics. [livejournal.com profile] baylorsr said I looked like a teacher from Hogwarts, so win. [livejournal.com profile] baylorsr was a very cute ladybug and the Baylor Sister was a fairy. We passed out candy to the neighborhood kids and ate rice krispy treats and "eyeballs".

After trick-or-treating was over [livejournal.com profile] baylorsr and I decided to be super-lame and go out and actually purchase the House of Wax remake ([livejournal.com profile] hiyacynth said we should!). It wasn't nearly gory enough but there were a couple decent startles and it didn't completely suck so I guess it was worth five bucks.

We did not have a bonfire or try to divine the future via the entrails of burnt sacrifices, but it was still a good time all around. I came home utterly exhausted and immediately went to bed.

Am still fairly exhausted. Kind of want to spend the rest of forever snuggled under the blankets on my bed. That sounds like a good plan.

Dear SPN 4x07,

Only spoilery if you consider a single word spoken in the episode as such )

Me and Bobby will continue to look at you like crazy people until you LEARN HOW TO SAY IT RIGHT!

More salient and serious reactions to come, I'm sure.

PS: I totally started quoting that poem from The Grey King during the episode. You know, the one that starts off with, "On the day of the dead, when the year too dies ..." And you know what? I totally still have it memorized. Being a nerd is AWESOME.

PPS: I just went outside to blow out my jack o'lanterns (a couple creepy little kids and a spooky scarecrow. I'd post pictures if I could ever figure out how to get txtlj to work) and it was all dark and windy. I was sure something was going to jump on me while I was blowing out the candles. It's Devil's Night, you never know what might happen. *cue scary music*

PPPS: The Time of the Great Pumpkin. Trust me, you'll know why I thought of this while I was watching the ep. Robot Chicken FTW.

Sekrit code to [livejournal.com profile] baylorsr: It's finally open season on people!

Dude, lj's, err, excuse me, undeadjournal's banner is freaking awesome. It's stuff like this that makes me love Halloween, even if I'm not a big scary movie buff (I blame my parents for that one, we weren't allowed to watch scary things as kids and by the time I was introduced to such classics as Halloween and Children of the Corn my brain had already glommed onto other things to be scared of). Imma eat your brainzzzzz!!!

Actually, I've always been a fan of Halloween. First it was the candy and costumes and now it's the whole feel of the holiday. It's one of the few holidays where the pagan roots still shine through and highlight the hidden depths of the most mundane things. There's something about the mystery and spirit of the holiday that sets me all a'tizzy.

Not surprisingly, one of my favorite Halloweens was during my sophomore year of college. We closed ourself off in a salt-lined dorm room, lit some candles, and had a tarot card reading. It hit all of the right buttons.

Cut because I think this is going to get long )

So, there you have it; I believe and don't want to believe all at the same time. And if I ever actually saw anything with my own two eyes I'd probably run screaming like the little girl I am.

You know what? If I had my way Halloween and Thanksgiving would be fused together. The American Thanksgiving is ridiculous. It's supposed to be a harvest festival but we celebrate it at the end of November which is definitely not harvest season. I'd make it more like the Days of the Dead in Mexico with a day or so of rememberance and reflection on those who have gone on, a night of revelry, and a final day of thanksgiving for all we still have and the promise of the coming year. I'd schedule it right at the end of October and possibly incorporate the New Year/Old Year element of Celtic Samhain as well. But maybe not since I like the way the midwinter week of festivities from Christmas to New Year's comes together.

And there you have it, my .05 on all sorts of things. Having opinions is fun.

I am so jealous of all of the people writing stories or working on NaNoWriMo or doing anything creative whatsoever. I've reached that point in the term when all of my creative impulses feel like sludge and I miss their liquidity so much.

Yeah, I'll totally get some cheese to go with that whine and get over it. ;-)

And please, please, please people don't stop writing. I'd forgotten how fanfiction was pretty much the only thing that could get me through.

I don't have much to report. I updated my SPN fic recs last night. The quantity isn't as high as usual but the quality is through the roof. [livejournal.com profile] hiyacynth has written some primo Sam Winchester dark!fic that I think everyone needs to read right now.

In the non-fandom world I have been plodding dutifully away at my studies and not accomplishing much else. I bore even myself some days, it's all very sad. *cries one, perfect, emo tear* Halloween was a bit of a bust because I had a big bucket of candy to pass out and no trick-or-treaters to share it with. However, that also means that I now have a big bucket of candy to eat, so I guess it turned out okay. ;-)

By this time next week I predict that the world will have ended in the Great Fangirl Apocalypse. Bring on the End Times, woohoo!

Hallowe'en

I was so freaking exhausted this morning. After a weekend of Halloween fun my eyes simply did not want to open when my alarm raucously sounded this morning. The festivities were worth it though, as we all ate and scared and played. There were pumpkins carved and games played and scavenger hunts overcome and kids scared. All in all the perfect Halloween experience. [livejournal.com profile] drunken_buzzard's parties get better and better and more and more elaborate and I can't wait to find out what next year holds. I got back yesterday evening and after passing out some candy to kids in my parents' neighborhood I hurried back home and crashed. What a great weekend.

Oh yeah, and there are some preliminary photos of the weekend up over here. Go take a look, if you dare. Mwahahahahaha

And now all of us Americans prepare to cast one of the most important votes we'll ever have the privilege to cast. May we have the wisdom to make the best choice.
