Ugh. What a strange weekend. Not in the 'a lot of stuff happened' sort of way but more in the 'emotional rollercoaster (I'm a big ol' manic-depressive)' sort of way. I really need to stop telling myself I suck, it's not terribly productive.

Was able to leave work on Friday to help with some Hurricane relief. Went over to the church and sorted donations and filled up food boxes for survivors moving into the area. It was good, hard work. Later that night there was much unloading of food from semis and loading of food onto semis but I had already left by then. I left that to the young men who had come in fresh after school/work and who hadn't been lugging around boxes of canned food all day.

However, had diet schedule thrown off for the day. Because I am easily swayed I talked myself into getting an ice cream sundae at this parlor that has been taunting me every day that I go to the LSAT prep course. I got a junior sundae that was still huger then huge. It was two scoops of ice cream in a cream puff, smothered in hot fudge. It turned out to be some kind of leaning tower of ice cream. Very yummy and completely un-finishable by your's truly.

Unfortunately, went back on the diet the very next day. Am thankfully not as generally hungry as I was before. Am possibly still living off of residual sugar. mmmmmmmmm

Rome was very good last night. It's all so ... Roman and wonderful. The characters are oodles of fun and while the pace can sometimes be a titch slow there's more then enough political and/or character goodness to make my brain happy.

Re-watched more Lost. Am now through 1.08 ('Confidence Man' [Sawyer ep.]). I actually fast-forwarded a lot through that one. It had some good stuff (Charlie & Claire) and some annoying stuff (Jack's reaction to Sawyer). It's fascinating how subtly the writers handle the episodic POVs. Characters are different when seen through which ever set of eyes the episode is filtered through. It's subtle, but it's there. Take, for instance, the difference in Jack characterization between 'White Rabbit' and 'The Moth'. In 'White Rabbit' he dithers and angsts, not sure of himself or what he is doing. In 'The Moth' we see Jack through Charlie's eyes so gone is the self-doubt and instead is this strong, hero type who only wants the best for those around him.

This subtle POV shift is most obviously and yet most delicately accomplished in the two Korean episodes. Most episode lists say that 1.06 ('House of the Rising Sun') is a Sun & Jin episode but I see it primarily as a Sun episode. We see all of the action through her eyes and feel all of our emotions in relation to how she is treated. Yet, knowing how Jin views the same events makes his character more sympathetic on second viewing. I simply cannot get over how rich all of these characters are.

And, yes, I still can't believe how much Kate has improved on second viewing. But, then again, she didn't annoy me so much till around mid-season, so we'll just have to wait and see if my newfound empathy lasts to the end.

Another LSAT prep test tonight. Oh joy, oh rapture.

Word Origin of the Day: Cartoon - The root work in Italian was carta, meaning "paper." In its original use, a "cartoon" was "any drawing made on paper." In French, this was carton before arriving in English as "cartoon." In the 1600s, the meaning had narrowed to refer to "a type of drawing - a sketch - done in preparation for a painting." During the 1800s, the modern meaning emerged from the magazine and newapaper industry.

I, too, succumbed to the call of the ice cream on Friday night. However, I managed not to buy any more when I went grocery shopping on Saturday. And I'm back on my frozen veggie entrees for lunch, which helped a lot last year.

And, continuing our brainshare, I'm also rewatching Lost. I'm up through "Special"--Michael's episode (because yes, I spent THAT much time in front of my TV this weekend). I cannot say much of intelligence about it. You're way better at that than I am. Apparently, though, I'm a very bad person, because for the second time I was glad when Shannon appeared to be dead. And I still wish that had been true and not poor dead Boone. I also <3 Hurley even more this time through, and also Michael.

Oh ice cream, why do you taunt us so?

I do have to admit that I have a half-gallon of Edy's in my freezer but since it's the double-churned, half the fat stuff I don't feel too guilty about having a bit with my dinner.

Frozen veggie entrees? What, pray tell, are those?

Poor, poor dead Boone. I'm a bad person in that I was mocking his death while it was happening. But, when I saw the Pilot again I got a little choked up by how much he was trying to help and how he was going to be dead soon. *sniffle* Poor, poor Boone.

I don't blame you for wanting Shannon dead. She really can be a manipulative bitch. Michael and Hurley deserve all of the love in the world. If I were on the island I'd be hard pressed to choose between them but since I probably wouldn't get the choice anyway I suppose I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

Green Giant frozen veggies. Five minutes in the microwave. They're the perfect at-work lunch. My favorites are brocolli and cheese, green bean casserole (especially in winter) and the various rice pilafs. They are often on special at many stores and are a relatively inexpensive and definitely easy and veggirific lunch option.

I'm going to say it to the world. I love Boone. I loved Boone from the start. And not just because he was pretty (which didn't hurt). He was dumb in exactly the way I would be dumb in that situation. Trying really hard to help but just lacking in the fundamental skills required. Though I probably would have been madder at Locke for that forced vision quest via the wacky-jungle-paste-in-the-wound thing. I'm still mad at him about that.

You know what I love most about Michael? That he hasn't been all vindictive about Walt's mother, trying to make himself look better by pointing out that she took Walt away and kept M's letters from him. He's really trying to give his son a healthy, happy memory of his poor dead mother, and he's not going to stop doing that just because it might make HIM look better to the kid. Plus, pretty.

Hurley is my True Island Hero, though. And Charlie owns my hobbity heart. I think I'm one of the only people who just doesn't care about Sawyer.

Hmm, I'll have to keep my eyes open for those. They sound yummy.

Aaaaww, your Boone love is so sweet. You know, it's probably because of Boone's relatability as a character that turned so many people off. They didn't want to see someone mess up like they would. The longer he's been gone the more I've missed him and I can't imagine what next season will be like without him.

I agree with your Michael thoughts. He's such a great, natural father. And now there needs to be an icon of Hurley that says True Island Hero.

Sawyer's quite the divisive little booger. He's hot, so lots of people love him but he's also self-centered and petty so lots of people hate him. Me, I simply appreciate the attractivness and the snide comments and cease to care once the channel has been turned.

And now I have a Hurley icon project. Actually, I have two, because I desperately need one of him saying, "Dude. Our lives suck."

Yeah, I will join you in just appreciating teh pretteh and teh snark, because Sawyer is good for both.

Poor Dead Boone. I think you're right. Too much like us to be interesting to most of us. I, of course, am just self-absorbed enough to really appreciate having someone like me (but richer and prettier) out there.

Couldn't get the True Island Hero one to work for me last night. Will try again this weekend. Now off to all-day meeting for which I had to wear a suit and closed-toed shoes.

The only time you can say you suck is if you have a significant other.

Today's pep talk has been brought to you by "inappropriateness."

Also... I don't remember whom I spoke with about this, but I think the most fascinating thing about Lost is relating all the characters to the characters from Stephen King's The Stand.

HA! You, sir, are the King of Inappropriateness.

*bows down*

It is fascinating and there is quite a bit of correlation. Lost steals quite liberally from lots of sources but The Stand is very evident in a lot of not only the burgeoning mythology but also the character interactions. It's pretty dang cool.

Just so you know: You rock. In both general and specific ways.

Also, if it makes you feel better, I eat ice cream damn near every day.

Aaaaww, thanks. You do too.

You know, I didn't have any ice cream yesterday. I should rectify that this evening. =D
