Jul. 5th, 2008 03:44 pmLook at one of the shiny new law-themed icons that
hiyacynth made for me. This one is of Sandy Cohen straining under the weight of all of his lawyerliness. I think it's appropriate for how I'm feeling right now.
'Cause guess what: fibromyalgia = 10 million, me = zip, zilch, nada, and/or zero. The two sides of my psyche are currently warring, do I spend at minimum $9/day to take a cab to class (and that's if I only take it either there or back, not both) with no guarantee that I'll feel well enough to enjoy my time in England, or do I skive off class, thus guaranteeing that I can't sit the exams, and see something of the country that I've paid so much money to visit?
It's a conundrum. And the thing is, I am genuinely engaged by my classes, I think they're quite fascinating. But, on the other hand, I really didn't come here for the classes, no matter how interesting they may be.
But, enough of that, let's talk about some of the neat things I've discovered about England, even though I've been holed up in my room. First off, there's Cadbury candy. OMG, I knew I loved Cadbury chocolate because there is a small supply of it available in my hometown (thank goodness we're so close to Canada) but they have bars here I've never seen before and cannot get enough of. Crunchies and Twirls and Flakes, oh my. I could eat only chocolate for the rest of my time here and be perfectly content. Vitamin-deprived, but content.
And the pastries. I can buy really tasty pastries right at the local co-op. That is not someting I'm used to. I think I've subsisted solely on pastries for the past three days. Okay, not solely (there are those egg&cheese bagels I bought when I was up before the cafes were open), but nearly so.
I haz a Bodleian Library card! *iz ridiculously excited* I can go in and wander around one of the largest libraries in the U.K. whenever I so fancy! It's a very important card, I had to take an oath in order to get it and everything. But OMG library.
The route I take to class may be trying for yours truly, but it is lovely. I walk right down Broad and Holywell streets, which are adjacent to the Baliol, Merton, and New Colleges. I don't think its even registered yet how old some of these building are, that they predate every building I've ever seen before. I'm sure even some of the street stones are older than my entire nation. It's quite something.
Okay, I think I'm going to go lay down until the Who finale is on. Another good thing about being over here is I can watch it in real time, not have to wait for a torrent to download. Well, so long as my housemates are away. I am quite curious as to how Rusty&Pals are going to resolve their latest mindbender.
Okay then, nap tiem. yayz
