Jun. 28th, 2006 09:54 amI learned today that two of my college friends,
drunken_buzzard and
chica_buena, are going to have a baby! That is the bestest news to wake up to! I am so happy for them and am filled with joy to think that a little them will soon be inhabiting our planet. It's all sorts of wonderful.
Don't forget to sign up for A Pirate's Life For Me! I like to think of it as the Multifandom Pirate Challenge which means that you can take a fandom or story of your choosing and make it 100% better by adding pirates. You should go check it out, you'll be happy you did.
I've been rushing to download all of the SPN episodes that I want before I move so last night was spent in the warming glow of my computer (after I had finished moving boxes, that is). I kinda love this show.
There are so many things that I love about 'Faith'. My first time through I didn't love it, maybe I wasn't watching through the right mental filter, or something, but now I want to hold it and cuddle it and never let it go.
The best thing about it is, of course, the Dean angst. He almost dies and then he's saved but someone else has to die and the whole situation just piles more and more guilt on his shoulders, it's great. I usually have a very low tolerance for man pain (*cough* Lee Adama and his Lake of Despair and Woe *cough*) but Dean does angst like you wouldn't believe. It's subtle, mostly portrayed through a look or a seemingly innocuous question/response. He doesn't let it drag him down, he does his job even when it's killing him inside. His focus is always outward and, wow, I'm not being terribly coherent but, yeah, love love love. This episode was founded by and is dedicated to the Dean love and that is all kinds of wonderful.
Not that there isn't Sam love here too. Sam's determination to save Dean, no matter what, is great. He'll do anything, believe anything and push, pull and cajole Dean into doing whatever it takes to make him better. However, I also love that he understands Dean's response to being healed only because someone else had to die. There's a great moment when Dean comes into the motel room and Sam's at the computer and the first thing Sam says is "Sorry" because he knows that having evidence of that sort of horrible trade will tear Dean up inside. And people say Sam doesn't understand his big brother.
The brother!love is strong in this ep and I love it. They also did a good job of paralleling Sue Ann and Sam and they didn't feel the need to come out and bang you over the head with the similarities, for once. I also liked how they balanced a crazy!Christian (Sue Ann) with good hearted people of faith (Roy and Layla). Great, great stuff.
There a blink and you'll miss it reference to a Joshua who's a friend of their dad's and who clues Sam in to Roy LeGrange. Maybe we'll meet him some day and he won't die 10 seconds later.
'Phantom Traveller' is loads of fun for completely different reasons. Who else, upon seeing the first scene in the airport bathroom with the guy getting possessed by the demon and having the black eyes shouted, "OMG, it's Krycek in the bathroom and the black oil and OMG!" and then flailed around the room? Come on, you know you did. =D
And Jerry! I kind of love Jerry and want to see more of him. I love his whole vibe. He knows that poltergeists and strange things like that are real and he might not be out there hunting them but he has no problem calling in the Winchester experts to take care of the problem. I seriously, seriously love Jerry, like a lot.
This leads me to want to compose a list of one-episode characters that I want to see more of. Here goes:
Officer Kathleen (The Benders)
Jerry (Phantom Traveller)
Sarah (Provenance)
The Geeks (Hell House)
Amanda and Lucas (Dead in the Water)
Haley (Wendigo)
Bobby (Devil's Trap)
That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I'm sure the list will be amended frequently.
Back to 'Phantom Traveller', it shouldn't amuse me so much that Sam gets to be the hero of the episode, but it does. Dean and Sam jumping over the hangar fence will never not be hot. Now I'm curious, though, about their suits in 'Something Wicked'. They're quite obviously not the same suits (they're much nicer) so where did the get them? Was it Sam who talked Dean into spending a little extra and getting something really nice or what? Fic, people, we need explanations for these very important matters. ;-)
A note to fandom: I've been meaning to say this for a while but I would really appreciate it if you (and you know who you are) would quit with the whole nickname argument. Much in the same way that I still call my little brother 'Jimmy' Dean will inadvertantly call Sam 'Sammy' and Sam doesn't make a big deal out of it. Canonically he has brought it up with Dean once and that was in the Pilot when Sam was making a big deal of asserting his maturity. Yes, he brought it up with John but that was a completely different sort of situation.
Sorry. *breathes* The above paragraph really has a whole lot more to do with bad Buffy fandom nickname habits (you couldn't go very far without running across a Xander in a story who used 'G-Man' or 'DeadBoy' all of the freaking time, it was annoying) then any sins the SPN fandom might have. Come on, you know I love you best.
I swear I had something else to say but Sam and Dean have completely driven all other thoughts out of my head. Good job, guys, carry on.

Yes. That's the Sam we should get to see.
Also, I want to see Haley again too.

Hee. That's frequently how I react to the many, many X-Filesish things I see in SPN.
