Dec. 28th, 2005 05:10 pmChristmas came and went and was joyful and happy and overwhelming, same as always. I got some pretty exciting loot and had the joy of picking out some great gifts for the rest of the fam. Spent most on the Da but seeing as Band of Brothers also works as a gift for myself I don't regret a penny of it.
I got the Collector's Edition of Batman Begins that comes with a nifty graphic novel. As we were watching the movie last night I had a neat thought. Okay, see, in the included comics which were, apparently, what Goyer and Nolan based their script on, Harvey Dent is a main character and I get the feeling that they created the Rachel Dawes character because the movie was already male top-heavy and being a D.A. is relatively gender neutral. Now, at the end of the comic we see Dent's house being blown up which leads, presumably, to the creation of Two Face. Wouldn't it be neat if the movies continue using Rachel instead of Harvey, thus making her into Two Face? You'd have to cut that angst with a knife, it'd be so thick. I imagine that the comic fans would cry foul but in the movie it would be a stroke of genius.
Frankly, what I got out of my latest viewing was an increased appreciation for the Rachel Dawes character. Her story is not Bruce's story. She was a driven individual who may have served as a kind of moral compass to Bruce Wayne at one point but she pushed herself through law school at a breakneck pace (she's working in the D.A.'s office when Bruce is still being kicked out of colleges). She's willing to do what's necessary to accomplish her goals and she doesn't shy away from facing the hard truths (i.e. the Bruce/Batman dichotomy). It would be a kick in the gut to see her become one of the bad guys.
Because Christmas was on a Sunday we had to wake up at the crack of dawn if we wanted to open presents before church. It was kind of neat, reminded me of the old days when my brothers and I wouldn't be able to sleep all night because we were so excited. It was especially poignant to have both of my brothers at home. This was the first time in 5 years that we've been a family for the holidays.
Got out and saw King Kong the Friday before Christmas. It's a very long movie. Good, but not gripping. There were too many chase scenes, too much overblown spectacle. The relationship between Ann Darrow and Kong was extremely well done. Neither of them could have done other then they did and that is the root of tragedy. Jack Black was born to play Carl Denham, fantastic job. All in all it was just too much and by the end I was strangely desensitized to it all. Many fanboys may be slavering but for me I'd rather go see Narnia again. =D
The New Year is nearly upon us. I wonder what 2006 will hold for us all.
