You know, I bet part of my stress was being internet incomunicada for the past week, or so. Right when I needed the soothing balm of fandom and lj friends I was cut off. Am feeling quite a bit calmer this afternoon.

I watched all of the Firefly dvds in three days. Wow.
I have two television show categories in my brain: Obsession and Perfection. These are frequently interchangeable. For example, The X-Files is both an obsession and tv perfection (remember, seasons 8 & 9 never happened). Most shows, however, easily fall under one category or another. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was an obsession. The early seasons of The West Wing are perfection. Firefly is also perfection.

What is the difference? Shows that I label as Perfect in my mental notebook are shows that ping on multiple levels. These are shows that have grewat writing, direction, acting and production values. They're taken seriously be their creators and have characters that I adore. Usually in a perfect show I have a difficult time choosing a favorite character because I love them all.

This doesn't mean that a show that falls under Obsession is poorly designed, acted or written; just that the overall experience isn't as ... perfect. With a perfect show I feel no need to fic the characters or situations because everything we're given is absolutely wonderful. There is no need for fanwank. I am left completely content by the experience. For better or worse Obsession shows tend to work me up and keep me worked up for long periods of time.

So you can know that I'm perfectly content in my Firefly viewing. I love all of the characters and am intrigued by them. It feels like Joss's most mature effort to date. The characters are the mature representations of all of his favorite character types. They're self aware and know what they want out of the 'verse even if they don't always know how to go about getting it.

I love these characters so much that I'm almost happy that Joss never got the chance to screw them up. You know Mr. Whedon, he loves to make his character's lives a living hell. I wouldn't have ever wanted to see a world where Simon betrayed River or Wash and Zoe broke up or Jayne lost Vera or anything like that. However, have to admit that I'm very excited for the movie. Very, very excited. I'd like to visit my friends again, please.

I don't know if I was going anywhere with this. I just know that I love good TV, it makes life so much happier.

Discuss: The word whore seems to be taking on new connotation as society changes. What is that new connotation (if any), why is it happening and how do you feel about it?

It's thundering outside. That sound still excites me.

ETA: For all you Potter-fans who will be buying and devouring the books this weekend please feel free to spoil me to your little hearts' content. I won't be buying the book, may never be buying the book and would dearly like to be able to understand the flood of fic that is about to be unleashed upon this corner of the internet. Harry Potter spoilers make little liptons happy.
