Since the 31st Annual Saturn Awards were announced this week and I'm sitting here bored off my duff, I thought I'd do a little rundown of the winners with my own patented commentary.

Best Science Fiction Film
The Butterfly Effect (New Line Cinema)
The Day After Tomorrow (20th Century Fox)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Focus Features)
The Forgotten (Sony Pictures)
I, Robot (20th Century Fox)
Sky Captain & The World of Tomorrow (Paramount)

I am extremely pleased with this award. Eternal Sunshine was one of the best films of 2004 and most certainly the best genre film released last year. They chose very wisely.

Best Fantasy Film
Birth (New Line Cinema)
Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban (Warner Bros.)
Hellboy (Sony Pictures)
House Of Flying Daggers (Sony Classics)
Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (Paramount)
Spider-Man 2 (Sony Pictures)

I'll admit it, I'm not a big Spiderman fan so my feelings are a little mixed on this one. I personally would have picked Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket but the award is definitely not undeserved. Good job Sam Raimi & Co.

Best Horror Film
Blade: Trinity (New Line Cinema)
Dawn of the Dead (Universal)
The Grudge (Sony)
Open Water (Lions Gate)
Saw (Lions Gate)
Shaun Of the Dead (Rogue Pictures)
Van Helsing (Universal)

Is Shaun of the Dead really a horror picture? And yet, if it isn't horror then what is it? Whatever the answer is to those questions the fact is that it's the most deserving of anything else in its category and certainly deserves the award.

Best Action/Adventure/Thriller Film
The Aviator (Miramax)
The Bourne Supremacy (Universal)
Collateral (DreamWorks SKG)
Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (Miramax)
The Manchurian Candidate (Paramount)
National Treasure (Buena Vista)
The Phantom Of The Opera (Warner Bros.)

I did not like either of the Kill Bills. They were boring and long and unengaging and sure Uma Thurman kicked all kinds of ass but after a while I was numb to it all. Though I did like that scene between her in Lucy Liu in the snowy garden. That was a very pretty scene. I say it should have been The Bourne Supremacy or possibly Collateral.

Best Animated Film
The Incredibles (Buena Vista)
The Polar Express (Warner Bros.)
Shark Tale (DreamWorks SKG)
Shrek 2 (DreamWorks SKG)

I have not seen any of these films but GO INCREDIBLES!!!

Best Actor
Christian Bale - The Machinist (Paramount)
Jim Carrey - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Focus Features)
Tom Cruise - Collateral (DreamWorks SKG)
Matt Damon - The Bourne Supremacy (Universal)
Johnny Depp - Finding Neverland (Miramax)
Tobey Maguire - Spider-Man 2 (Sony)

One can already see a Spiderman sweep coming. They are all deserving actors in deserving roles. Good for you Tobey.

Best Actress
Kim Basinger - Cellular (New Line Cinema)
Nicole Kidman - Birth (New Line Cinema)
Julianne Moore - The Forgotten (Sony)
Blanchard Ryan - Open Water (Lions Gate)
Uma Thurman - Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (Miramax)
Kate Winslet - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Focus Features)
Ziyi Zhang - House of Flying Daggers (Sony Classics)

WTF!!!!!? Some girl floats around in water and wins an award but Kate Winslet is shafted again?! So not on guys, you chose the wrong woman.

Best Supporting Actor
David Carradine - Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (Miramax)
Alfred Molina - Spider-Man 2 (Sony)
Gary Oldman - Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban (Warner Bros.)
Giovanni Ribisi - Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow (Paramount)
Liev Schreiber - The Manchurian Candidate (Paramount)
John Turturro - Secret Window (Sony)

Well. They give it to the washed up Kung-Fu guy rather then actors with actual range and talent. Interesting

Best Supporting Actress
Irma P. Hall - The Ladykillers (Buena Vista)
Daryl Hannah - Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (Miramax)
Angelina Jolie - Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow (Paramount)
Diane Kruger - National Treasure (Buena Vista)
Meryl Streep - The Manchurian Candidate (Paramount)

Maybe my hatred of Kill Bill makes me biased, but this sucks. Well, at least Meryl Streep didn't win.

Best Performance By A Younger Actor
Cameron Bright - Birth (New Line Cinema)
Perla Haney-Jardine - Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (Miramax)
Freddie Highmore - Finding Neverland (Miramax)
Jonathan Jackson - Stephen King’s Riding the Bullet (MPCA)
Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter & The Prisoner Of Azkaban (Warner Bros.)
Emmy Rossum - The Phantom Of the Opera (Warner Bros.)

What does this prove? That if you have breasts and let the director show them off you will win awards. Whatever.

Best Director
Alfonso Cuaron - Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban (Warner Bros.)
Michael Gondry - Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (Focus Features)
Michael Mann - Collateral (DreamWorks SKG)
Sam Raimi - Spider-Man 2 (Sony Pictures)
Quentin Tarantino - Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (Miramax)
Zhang Yimou - House Of Flying Daggers (Sony Classics)

On one hand I'm always happy to see a boy from Michigan get his props. On the other hand I think Cuaron and Gondry are better over all directors. But then Sam did give us that really sweet operating room scene. But Cuaron made me love a Harry Potter movie.

Best Writer
Stuart Beattie - Collateral (DreamWorks SKG)
Brad Bird - The Incredibles (Buena Vista)
Charlie Kaufman - Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (Focus Features)
Steve Kloves - Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban (Warner Bros.)
Alvin Sargent - Spider-Man 2 (Sony)
Quentin Tarantino - Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (Miramax)

Eh. The writing is always the weakest part of the Spiderman movies and the fact that the dialogue was less cheesy then the first one is hardly cause for an award. Charlie Kaufman deserved it.

Best Music
Danny Elfman - Spider-Man 2 (Sony)
Michael Giacchino - The Incredibles (Buena Vista)
Edward Shearmur - Sky Captain & The World Of Tomorrow (Paramount)
Alan Silvestri - The Polar Express (Warner Bros.)
Alan Silvestri - Van Helsing (Universal)
John Williams - Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban (Warner Bros.)

Something connected to Van Helsing won an award?! I am amazed and shocked.

Best Costume
Alexandra Byrne - The Phantom Of the Opera (Warner Bros.)
Kevin Conran - Sky Captain & The World Of Tomorrow (Paramount)
Wendy Partridge - Hellboy (Sony)
Gabriella Pescucci & Carlo Poggioli - Van Helsing (Universal)
Jany Temine - Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban (Warner Bros.)
Emi Wada - House Of Flying Daggers (Sony Classics)

Why do I get the feeling that this was a pity award? This is the one category that Phantom actually deserved to win. Though, he did put an eyepatch on Angelina Jolie and that was freakin' sweet.

Best Make-Up
David Anderson, Mario Cacioppo - Dawn Of the Dead (Universal)
Nick Dudman, Amanda Knight - Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban (Warner Bros.)
Jake Garber, Matt Rose, Mike Elizalde - Hellboy (Sony)
Valli O’Reilly, Bill Corso - Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (Paramount)
Paul Jones - Resident Evil: Apocalypse (Sony/Screen Gems)
Greg Cannom, Steve LaPorte - Van Helsing (Universal)

This is absolutely deserved. They designed makeup that looked absolutely real even after application. Kudos.

Best Special Effects
Peter Chiang, Pablo Helman, Thomas J. Smith - The Chronicles of Riddick (Universal)
Karen Goulekas, Neil Corbould, Greg Strause, Remo Balcells - The Day After Tomorrow (Paramount)
Roger Guyett, Tim Burke, Bill George, John Richardson - Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban (Warner Bros.)
John Nelson, Andrew R. Jones, Erik Nash, Joe Letteri - I, Robot (20th Century Fox)
John Dykstra, Scott Stokdyk, Anthony LaMolinara, John Frazier - Spider-Man 2 (Sony)
Scott Squires, Ben Snow, Daniel Jeannette, Syd Dutton - Van Helsing (Universal)

They win an Oscar, they win a Saturn. These guys must be good.

Best Network Television Series
Alias (ABC)
Angel (WB)
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (CBS)
Lost (ABC)
Smallville (WB)
Star Trek: Enterprise (UPN)

WHEEEEEE!! I forgive all of the Kill Bill awards!! Good job, guys.

Best Syndicated/Cable Television Series
Dead Like Me (Showtime)
The Dead Zone (USA)
The 4400 (USA)
Nip/Tuck (FX)
Stargate: SG-1 (Sci Fi Channel/MGM)
Stargate: Atlantis (Sci Fi Channel/MGM)

Am I missing something? 'Cause I think Stargate is just about the most boring show on television. I've tried to watch it, I really have but it's just too dull for words. And yet, everyone seems to love it. I've never even seen Dead Like Me and I would still pick that over anything that has to do with Stargate.

Best Television Presentation
The Dead Will Tell (CBS)
Farscape: Peacekeeper Wars (Sci Fi Channel)
5ive Days To Midnight (Sci Fi Channel)
Legend of Earthsea (Sci Fi Channel/Hallmark)
The Librarian: Quest For the Spear (TNT)
‘Salem’s Lot (TNT)

Highly deserved and certainly the most deserving in the category. This makes me happy.

Best Actor In A Television Series
Richard Dean Anderson - Stargate: SG-1 (Sci Fi Channel/MGM)
Ben Browder - Farscape: Peacekeeper Wars (Sci Fi Channel)
Matthew Fox - Lost (ABC)
Julian McMahon - Nip/Tuck (FX)
Tom Welling - Smallville (WB)
Noah Wyle - The Librarian:The Quest For the Spear (TNT)

YIPPEEEEEE! One of my boys wins an award!!! Oh happy day!

Best Actress In A Television Series
Kristin Bell - Veronica Mars (UPN)
Claudia Black - Farscape: Peacekeeper Wars (Sci Fi Channel)
Jennifer Garner - Alias (ABC)
Anne Heche - The Dead Will Tell (CBS)
Evangeline Lilly - Lost (ABC)
Amber Tamblyn - Joan Of Arcadia (CBS)

Dude, kick ass. So deserving it's not even funny. Love love lovelovelove

Best Supporting Actor In A Television Series
Kyle MacLachlan - The Librarian: Quest For the Spear (TNT)
James Marsters - Angel (WB)
Dominic Monaghan - Lost (ABC)
Terry O’Quinn - Lost (ABC)
Michael Rosenbaum - Smallville (WB)
Michael Shanks - Stargate: SG-1 (Sci Fi Channel/MGM)

This is absolutely inspired. I love you Dom and MR but Terry definitely deserves this one. And another boy from Michigan makes good.

Best Supporting Actress In A Television Series
Amy Acker - Angel (WB)
Erica Durance - Smallville (WB)
Torri Higginson - Stargate: Atlantis (Sci Fi Channel/MGM)
Samantha Mathis - ‘Salem’s Lot (TNT)
Amanda Tapping - Stargate: SG-1 (Sci Fi Channel/MGM)
Sonya Walger - The Librarian: Quest For the Spear (TNT)

Hold it, isn't Amanda Tapping the lead actress in Stargate? I'm confused. The people picked for the category aren't all that strong, anyway. What about Yoon-jin Kim or Emilie de Ravin or Gigi Edgely? They dropped the ball in this category.

Best DVD Release
Bionicle 2: Legends Of Metru-Nui (Buena Vista)
Ju-On: The Grudge (Lions Gate)
The Lion King 1 1/2 (Buena Vista)
The Lost Skeleton Of Cadavra (Columbia/TriStar)
Starship Troopers 2: Hero Of the Federation (Columbia/TriStar)
Ripley’s Game (New Line)

Well, that's random. o_O.

Best DVD Special Edition Release
The Chronicles of Riddick - Unrated Director’s Cut (Universal)
Hellboy - Director’s Cut (Columbia/TriStar)
King Arthur - Extended Unrated Version (Buena Vista)
The Lord Of the Rings: The Return of the King - Extended Edition (New Line)
Shrek 2 (DreamWorks)
Spider-Man 2 - Special Edition (Sony Pictures HE)

As if there was any other choice. Really.

Best DVD Classic Film Release
Aladdin (Buena Vista)
Dawn Of the Dead - Ultimate Edition (Anchor Bay)
Duel (Universal)
The Fearless Vampire Killers (Warner)
Freaks (Warner)
THX 1138 (Warner)

Sure, that works. No real opinion.

Best DVD Collection
The Best of Abbott and Costello - Vol. 1-3 (Universal)
The Ultimate Matrix Collection (Warner)
The Marx Brothers Silver Collection (Universal)
The Monster Legacy Collections (Universal)
The Star Wars Trilogy (Fox/Lucasfilm Ltd.)
The Tarzan Collection (Warner)

Even though the dvd version is a travesty and if Lucas is going to release a Star Wars dvd it should be the theatrical version I have no problem with the win. You know, if he wanted to mess with the movie he just should have done what every other director does and release a bunch of special edidtion dvds. But that would be logical.

Best DVD Television Release
Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Season 2 & 3 (Fox)
Farscape - Season 4 (ADV)
The Simpsons - Season 4 & 5 (Fox)
Smallville - Season 2 & 3 (Warner)
Star Trek: Voyager - Season 1-7 (Paramount)
A Wrinkle In Time (Buena Vista)

The only way I have to explain this is that Smallville really must kill brain cells. And here I thought I was only making a joke when I said that.

Best DVD Retro Television Release
Jonny Quest (Warner)
Land Of the Lost - Season 1 & 2 (Rhino)
Lost In Space - Season 1 & 2 (Fox)
My Favorite Martian - Season 1 (Rhino)
Night Gallery - Season 1 (Universal)
Star Trek: The Original Series (Paramount)

Hee. I concur.

I agree with most of your comments regarding Kill Bill, but one: Darryl Hannah managed to be incredibly menacing and still kinda sexy even with an eyepatch in her role. It was pretty impressive.

But, yeah -- Kate Winslett was awesome. Ditched an accent, acted quirky and cute instead of regal and not-in-this-century, and managed to work in a romantic role with Jim Carrey and make it all believable. She was amazing.

You have a very good point. And of all those nominated she is among the most worthy. It's quite possible that I still have some unresolved Kill Bill issues that caused me to unjustly lash out at Ms. Hannah's award. Or something;-).

And Kate was freaking robbed. There are just no words.

So glad you liked it. *wink and a grin*

It's okay, I used to be a Smallville fan too. I forgive you =D. *giggle* Seriously, though, the show does have some very good things going for it; it's very pretty and Michael Rosenbaum and Allison Mack and Annette O'Toole and John Glover are extremely talented actors. And, since it bears repeating, it's awfully pretty;-).
