Did you all hear about the eight extra-solar system planetary masses that have been discovered? Is that not the coolest thing evar?!

*puts on astronomy geek hat and dances around room*

See, I was a fan of all things astronomical before I had ever learned the word hobbit. I had the planets in the solar system memorized before I hit Kindergarten and fascinating details about them. I whet my literary teeth on my father's old copies of Arthur C. Clarke books and I wanted to be an astronaut before I understood exactly what an astronaut was. I am fascinated by the cosmos, it is my first true love. Hence, whenever I hear news about supernovae or planetary discoveries all of that old geeky love comes swelling to the surface.

Wow, you know, if I met Tom Hanks or Steven Spielberg I guess I really would have stuff to talk with them about, you know, after I finished indulging in a good ol' helping of fangirlishness.

I slept for something like 12 hours last night. I got home and BAM! I was out like a light. I really have to stop sleeping on the couch, it's not a good habit to get into. I'm blaming all of my excessive sleeping habits on the February doldrums. Nowhere and nothing is as cold and oppressively grey as Michigan in February and the warm streak we had a week ago just makes it worse. It is my plan to eventually take an annual vacation somewhere sunny and warm when this time of year rolls around. I hear Puerto Rico is nice, or Hawai'i.

You know, I haven't said anything about hobbits in a geologic age. I should rectify that. Until I think of something to say, here is today's entry from my word origin calender:
Stride - In Old English, this word, spelled the same, originally meant a "single, long step." It arose from the verb stridan, which meant something slightly different--"to walk or stand with legs far apart." Some scholars believe that in this form, it arose from a similar Germanic verb meaning "to fight" or "to quarrel." Perhaps the link here is the body language associated with this kind of stance. There are similar links in the history of the verb "to stare."

Happy Fro-day!

My brother started writing a "if Hobbits met science fiction" thing once, I'll have to kick him into encourage him to dig it out.
