Jul. 28th, 2011 08:04 pmI posted this on DW last night. Poor LJ, these DDoS attacks are so hard on you.
I had a fairly nasty flare-up over the weekend. It really knocked me out, I wasn't good for much of anything. With every flare-up things seem to get a little worse. It's as if every time I hit a higher plauteau it becomes the new status quo. Sometimes I think law school ruined my health for the rest of my life, which sounds totally hyperbolic but that doesn't make it untrue.
So, there's that. I've also been informed that I need to write a Band of Brothers alien apocalypse AU. Can you just imagine how awesome Falling Skies would be if it were anything like Band of Brothers? For a supposed military organization they have no Intel, no Ordinance, no Transportation, no support staff at all, except for a few civilians who cook the food. And don't get me started on how stupid it is to have civilians when the entire world is at war with the alien force. World War II might have had people who weren't formal members of the military but everyone was focused on the war effort.
Anyway, yes, BoB AU. We'd have to turn some of the guys into chicks and throw in other supporting characters but it still has definite awesome potential. It's such a shame that Graham Yost didn't just do that for his new TV show.
Don't worry, I haven't forgotten the meme. Just because I was away for a couple days doesn't mean I'm giving up.
8 – Do you write OCs [Original characters]? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs
LOLOLOLOL. Hi meme, you don't know me but yes, I have definite opinions about OCs. Mostly that they're awesome. I love original characters, I have created many original characters. A large percentage of my favorite stories either have original characters or further characterize canon characters who were only lightly sketched out in the source material.
I know, I know, everyone is always worried about Mary Sues. Yes, fanpeople create Mar[t]y S[t]ues, they are out there and they are ridiculous. But the fear of Mary Sues seems to be even more damaging than the Sues themselves. Mary Sue shouldn't be an excuse to try new things, to more fully develop your writing. We've all created them, even pro writers create them, often egregiously so.
And blah blah blah, you've all heard me go on at length about that. If you respect all of your characters, canon and OC, then you should be okay. Even self inserts who began as ways to imagine yourself hooking up with one of the canon characters can become real, compelling figures. It's amazing what a good story can do.
But, really, I said all of this much more coherently in a Mary Sue meta I wrote a couple years ago. My opinions really haven't changed since then.
