Sep. 29th, 2010 04:02 pmSecond Lt. The Wrestler has safely deployed to South Korea, there to remain for another year, or two (no one's sure which). The Parents have already talked to him via Skype and everything sounds just fine.
The Mum is very anxious about it all. But, as I haven't actually said to her (it would not be helpful), at least they didn't send him to Afghanistan.
Tangentially, do you all wanna hear about how I didn't end up being one step away from Jeffrey Dean Morgan? Of course you do. ;-)
So, way back last year (maybe the year before? It's hard to keep time straight) the Red Dawn remake was filming in my fair state. At about that time The Wrestler called me for whatever reason, and during our conversation told him about the filming (he's a huge Red Dawn fan from way back in the day). He proceeded to tell me that he knew about it and that he'd been approaced to be an extra in the movie. Apparently the casting people were reaching out to groups in the area who might contain people who had been trained by the Army to jump out of airplanes (of which the Wrestler is one such).
There were two ways I could have reacted to this: 1) I could have played it cool and been all "Being in a movie would be hella sweet. You should do that." or 2) I could have squealed over the phone at him, like the fangirl I am, "OMGOMGOMGOMG YOU HAVE TO DO THIS OMG DO YOU KNOW WHO'S IN IT????!!!!" I, being the ginormous goober that I am, did the latter. I'm sure this surprises no one.
I did recover pretty well after that and we ended the call at some later point without him making a firm decision. Cut to a little while later when I talk to/see him again and I followed up about the whole "him being a paratrooper extra" thing. He was unamused by the question and snippily responded "No." I guess he thought being an extra in a movie wasn't "cool" enough or something. :(
And that is how I didn't end up being one step away from JDM. Oh, for what could have been ...
