Humblest of Pies
Jul. 2nd, 2004 02:33 pmHere is me. Here is me eating my words. Yum yum, such tasty, tasty words.
Why, you ask, am I eating my words? Because I am now planning on doing the thing that I have sworn for the past year and a half I would not do, I am going to go back to school. Yes, that's right, I desire to re-enter Academia in order to pursue a graduate degree. However, since I still cringe at the thought of trying to teach any sniveling kids anything I am definitely not going for any sort of teaching certificate whatsoever. Nope, instead I plan on doing something even more insane, I plan on becoming a professional historian. Yes, that's right, I'm going for the doctorate. You may all mock and point fingers at your leisure;-).
In all seriousness, though, it feels so good to finally have some sort of goal, a direction I want to take my life in. Being a historian is, in a lot of ways, like being a professional student for the rest of my life and there is nothing I enjoy more then learning. You know, I like libraries, I enjoy dusty old tomes and I love thinking and pondering the actions and beliefs of people who lived hundreds or thousands of years ago. Thinking about my future actually makes me happy now, instead of miserably depressed. The world is such an exciting, fascinating place and now I'll get the chance to understand it even better. Anyway, Dr. Megan has a nice ring to it, don't you think? *giggle*
Now, let's just hope I'll not want to eat these words in a couple of years. *eyeroll*

Wow, that's exactly how I feel! Isn't it funny how finally figuring out the right goal for yourself and deciding to get on the path towards it can completely alter your perceptions? I'm so happy for you.

That's true of me as well, and I think it's why I love the academic life so much. My PhD program takes an average of 5 years, but I don't mind at all because I'm getting to do exactly what I want and having a blast while I'm at it. Besides, in a way it takes the pressure off; I don't have to make any big decisions or decide what to do next for another 4 years! :D
