A friend of mine got some deeply shitty news today, so I'm going to talk about television (it totally makes sense, trust me). Upfronts are this week, as I'm sure many of you are aware, and there are some interesting-ish new shows. I mean, hell, NBC had to order a bajillion new shows to fill up the nuclear wasteland left by The Jay Leno Show. So let's start with them.

NBC

This network ordered and snatched up pilots from some of the more successful TV creators, like JJ Abrams, David E. Kelley, and Dick Wolf (even though they felt the need to cancel the original Law and Order, which I hear was getting pretty damn good again; I was even thinking of catching up on it, something I haven't done since Jerry Orbach died). They have:

Undercovers or "JJ Abrams returns to the world of spies" ala Alias. I have no clue whether Rambaldi will be involved, but the clips up on Hulu look interesting. The two main characters are spies who are married to each other, so hopefully there won't be any unrequited love bullshit, and I do always like characters who have a mature relationship (see also: Wash/Zoe). Plus, the main characters are portrayed by actors of color, one of whom is Martha Jones's little sister, which is not something I think we've ever seen on a primetime action/adventure show. It also has Gerald McRaney, who I've loved for years but more so after his turn on Deadwood as George Hearst (I hated Hearst but was really impressed by McRaney portrayal). I am intrigued enough to give it a looksee.

The Event aka "Government Conspiracies FTW!" The trailer and the subject matter mean that I'll check out the pilot, but we'll see how it goes. Since it doesn't have any actors/writers/directors who I fan and we all know how convoluted and ridiculous conspiracy shows can get, my continued viewership will hinge on the characters. Though their US President character is very much a Barack Obama homage, which I'm sure I'll appreciate.

The Cape aka "Cop turned Superhero, News at 11." You all know I love a good superhero show, I try them all out, with varying levels of success. It looks a little more Batman Begins than X-Men as none of the characters seem to have superpowers and the supporting cast is excellent: James Frain (Cromwell from The Tudors, Summer Glau, and Keith David. OMG I LUV U KEITH DAVID! Seriously, I was kind of meh about the clips on Hulu until I saw the one with Keith David as a magician. So I guess the main character, instead of being schooled by ninjas will learn the practical art of magic ala Houdini. I can dig that. I'll definitely have to check it out.

NBC also has a buttload of new comedies (including the one with Danneel Harris) and a US Marshals show with David Nutter. I don't think I'll check in for any of those, though, notwithstanding my love for David Nutter. Step away from Jerry Bruckheimer, David, and we'll talk.

Phew, that's a lot of TV. But onwards and upwards!

Fox

Terra Nova aka "Time Travel to Save the Human Race!" You know me, guys, they had me with the words "time travel." It's slated as "in development" at IMDb and I don't think there's been any casting yet, but Steven Spielberg is listed as an Executive Producer. It also lists Brannon Braga (bleh) and David Fury (interesting). I guess we'll have to see.

Nothing else at Fox really pings my interest, a lot of comedies, a cop show from the guy who created The Shield (which is shot on location in Chicago, which is cool), and some Vortex-ian actors spread out across the line-up (Garret Dillahunt, Adrianne Palicki) but nothing that really catches the eye.

Next!

ABC

No Ordinary Family ie; what if your family woke up with superpowers? Which, dude, that would kind of suck. Family's annoying enough as it is, but with superpowers? Ugh. I guess this is the Marvel counterpart to NBC's DC, which is kind of lolarious. Also, it stars Julie Benz, Autumn Reeser, and Tate Donovan. You know I'd watch the pilot for Autumn Reeser alone. ILU TAYLOR!!!

There's also a series supposedly set in Detroit (though whether they filmed there I don't know) called Detroit 1-8-7- and whether it's good or bad it's going to be really fucking depressing. I'll probably try to catch a little bit of it because, well, Detroit. I hope they do at least 2nd Unit in Detroit, or at the very least Vancouver, because LA looks nothing like Michigan. Just checked IMDb and it films in Atlanta which is better than LA, and the population is more representative of Detroit than Vancouver would be. Eh, the trailer doesn't look that great, anyway.

They also have some comedies one of which has Kurt Fuller and another has Allison Janney. As you can tell, I'm not a big comedy fan, I usually wait till they marathon in syndication because that's how I roll.

CBS

I don't usually watch anything on CBS, though I did watch Jericho a couple years back (in which BTW, SKIP NEVER DIED). There's not a lot that looks terribly interesting this year. There are a couple shows with casting of interest: a remake of Hawaii Five-0 with Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park and a cop show with Tom Selleck and Donnie Wahlberg. But nothing that looks to steer me CBS's way.

The CW has its upfronts tomorrow, and there's a possibility that they'll pick up a show with Ben Browder (which is exciting). And I think they've already picked up the La Femme Nikita reboot which is of interest.

YAY for TV! Why yes, I will indulge in this particular opiate for the masses, thank you for asking. =D

It totally makes sense to me. Distract me with nonsense, woman!

Alright, and this afternoon you informed me of the new cheerleading show (thank you, Tommy, even though I know you have some bone to pick with him but now I can't remember what it was) and the new Aaron Stanford/Shane West vehicle that I can't wait for - hmmm, did you think I will end up slashing it? I kind of slash them already, but you know, is that weird?

But how about "Chaos" - I think it's CBS or Fox, I'm not sure. Directed by Brett Ratner and starring Freddy Rodríguez and Eric Close. From what I gather, it's about a CIA team whose job it is to go take care of problems when other agents screw up or go rogue or something. Eric Close is playing the Skinner-esque Director and Freddy is top billed and I'm under the impression he is the psuedo-team leader. I'm excited, I haven't seen Freddy around in ages and Eric is suppose to have a foul-mouth and rough people up a lot.

And "Blue Steel"? It's Poppy Montgomery's new show but it also has Marc Blucas, Titus Welliver, Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Scott Foley. Marc and Poppy are FBI agents or detectives or something and they are investigating a collegues murder. I thought I heard at one point that it had like an un-explained case theme going for it, like a weird X-Files/Fringe combo, maybe. I can't remember now, but hey, look at that cast.
