Nov. 20th, 2009 11:35 amI, ummm, am not reading responses to last night's episode. Let's just say, I don't think that my opinion and fandom's will mesh very well, if only because I thought that it was a pretty damn good ep.
You know, it's funny. Back before 5x02 I was nearly ready to leave Show forever if it killed Jo or Ellen, and especially if it killed Jo&Ellen. I was just done, done with Show's issues done with it all. And then, not only did they survive but I sincerely and truly loved the episode (feelings I had not had for the season four ender or the season five opener). And I don't know what happened.
All I know is that I cried like a baby during Jo&Ellen's final scene. Theirs was a good death, something that Ash never got, nor Andy. For better or worse, Show has telescoped in on the Apocalypse and the only people safe from death are those whose stories are likewise bound up in the Apocalypse. And for as willing as I am to kill Bobby Singer off (and I'm pretty frigging willing) it would be a cheat to kill him now when it seems like there's something else that has to happen in his own personal journey (and no, I don't mean he has to be healed. Frankly, I really hope they don't heal him for a lot of reasons I won't get into here).
I know that wank is going to fly and sides are going to be taken and fans are going to try to make other fans feel shitty for not sharing the same opinions and I just don't want to see it happen. Jo and Ellen were great characters who had great deaths and that's really all I want to say on the subject.
I think I just need space to mourn them properly.
So there you go.

baylorsr and I had last night:
baylorsr: Lost has been on for six seasons? OMG!
liptonrm: Well, they spent two or three seasons in the middle not knowing what they were doing, so, yeah, I guess.
baylorsr: No, what I mean is that we knew each other when it started! I was old then and I'm even older now! And you weren't old then but you are now! How did this happen?!
liptonrm: Life sucks.
And then we watched Lazarus Get Over Here again because we're the kind of dorks who fan our own insanity.

Date: 2009-11-20 04:50 pm (UTC)I also thought it was a damned good episode. I just wish... Yeah. I just wish that Show hadn't set a precedent that it followed through on last night, so that Jo and Ellen's deaths could be, for me, ONLY about that amazing episode.
Because I bawled like a baby, too, and was so proud of both of them for the choices they made and the courage, loyalty, and love they acted with throughout, and the journey they've both been on (especially the stuff that's happened while Show hasn't been looking directly at them), and ALL THAT.
I just wish that their deaths didn't feel inevitable because of issues outside the characters' situation--that is, because apparently the writers feel the need to kill off every recurring female character except Meg.
That's all. I'm going to try now to fog out all the other stuff so I can only think of the episode in its own context.
*still has no female-character SPN icons* *or, for pete's sake, ANY female-only icons* *is as bad as the people I'm mad at* Sheesh.
