Back to the Grindstone
Oct. 27th, 2003 09:02 amAfter a weekend of partying it was almost impossible to actually wake up this morning. Grrr. I'm here now and ready to spend another 'fun-filled' day answering phones and doing everyone else's grunt work. Thank goodness it pays the bills.
It was an absolutely crazy experience. My friends had a whole Halloween extravaganza planned out. I arrived Friday evening and the real fun began Saturday afternoon. We carved pumpkins, we played bingo and then the ten year old nephew went to stay at grandma's and the party really began.
People started filtering in and the drinking began. Some great Halloween treats had been prepared, I had never eaten a severed finger before and I found out they're really quite tasty, they reminded me of butter cookies;-). We ordered some pizzas and were hanging out. Then the fun began. The lights shut out, a woman screamed and the mystery began. Our host came out with a letter from his wife, saying that she had left because someone was stalking her at work. The letter was sufficiently hair-raising but then we, the guests, were told that it was out job to go through various rooms in the house to find clues that would lead us to the culprit of the murder.
The rooms were the icing on the cake. They were skillfully and terrifyingly decorated. The bathroom was lit in red lights with blood spattered all over the floor and shower, the laundry room had a 'severed head' bouncing around in the dryer, you had to put your hand in chicken guts in the kitchen, but it was the bedroom that really freaked me out. It was set up as an homage to the scariest movie ever, The Ring.
I creeped into the bedroom. There were three TV's on, one had The Ring playing on a loop and the other two just showed static. I started searching the room for clues, though it was difficult to see with only the television sets serving as a light source. I noticed a clue peeking out from under one of the sets, so I picked it up, looked at the clue and when I turned around standing right by my shoulder was that freaky little girl from the movie. I screamed and hit her, only to find out it was one of our friends who had supposedly had to leave before the 'game' started. Nothing and no one has ever scared me so much, ever. My friends really are the reigning champions of Halloween.
That was my weekend. Fun times indeedy. I came home to find three great fanfics had been updated. Yay! I just have to share them with you all.
Will the Watchmen by Madeline Mitchell Carr.
This wonderful story is set as a coda to Susan Cooper's Dark is Rising Sequence. Madeline skillfully and empathetically showcases what Will must have been feeling after the story is over and he is the only one left who remembers the what really happened. Beautiful story.
Fury by Slynn.
This is set in the Buffyverse and is the third story in a great psychological thriller series that began with The Game. Though the stories tend to focus on Buffy and Xander all of the characters from mid-season five are prominently featured. This is a great look at how the gang would react when one of their own is threatened. Go, read.
By Chance or Purpose by Shirebound.
Last, but certainly not least, we have the latest chapter in a work that focuses in detail on the trek from Bree to Rivendell. Shirebound has a deft touch with hobbits and all things Tolkien and this work is no exception. This story is a sequel to her work Quarantined which began a tiny, little alternate universe retelling of the story. Though this is officially an AU it's adherence to book canon is exemplary. If you love Lord of the Rings and can't get enough of hobbits then this is the story for you.
Phew. That was more then I bargained for. I think I'll just go ahead and take a nap on my desk...
