Warning: The following is an unapologetically political post. If that's something that bothers you please surf on by.

I was meandering around the internetz, minding my own business and procrastinating when I came across the idea that the Democrats might be pulling away from health care reform and I just about saw red. The very intimation that the government I helped elect was going to back down in the face racist, ignorant jackasses who have used incoherent screaming and misinformation as debating tactics is simply unacceptable.

I haven't said much about health care reform because I support it and I didn't want to give any more credence to the irrational morons who have been yelling and screaming and generally acting like a 2 year-old having a temper tantrum. I was under the impression that my elected officials could see as clearly as I could that the bulk of opposition had very little to do with actual health care reform and more to do with their deep fear over their loss of control. I think its reprehensible that people have to go bankrupt just to pay for health care, that insurance companies are allowed to make life and death decisions based solely on how best it will line their pocketbooks. I think a great social injustice is being perpetrated upon the vast majority of the American people, both the insured and the uninsured.

So I finally decided to do something, the very little that I, alone, could do: I wrote to my representatives. I sent emails to my senators and my Congressional representative. I also emailed the White House to express my opinions. If we don't want the crazy people to control the debate then we need to find some way to make our voices heard and since I don't have the kind of money or corporate connections that would allow me to rabble rouse this is the best alternative I can suggest. If the large-scale internet discussions of the past year have proven anything it's that we can be both loud and convey our arguments with reason and insight so let's share those qualities with the people who make the policy. After all, all of the LJ posts in the world won't make a political difference if our elected officials can't hear us.

And there's my .02. Now I have to go back to studying another migraine-inducing subject, immigration law.
