Fic: Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice
Jul. 28th, 2009 09:13 pmTitle: Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice
Fandom: Supernatural
Disclaimer: Alas, Kripke and the WB own it all. Here’s hoping they picked up on that lesson about sharing right before naptime.
Rating: PG-13 (language, violence, and intense situations)
Spoilers: A sequel to More Than Just a Pretty Face and while this story stands on its own reading the prior story could definitely be helpful. Set during the front half of SPN Season 4 with general plot spoilers for the bulk of the season.
Author’s Note: This, like the vast majority of my work, would not have been possible without
baylorsr and
hiyacynth. They both cheerleaded during the planning stage and beta’d during the editing stage. Their love and enthusiasm made all of this possible.
Summary: Three blonde chicks walk into a bar. It might sound like the beginning of a joke but you’d better watch your back 'cause these chicks will fuck your shit up.
( The figure in the grass stood and shutter-jerked across the field, its eyes dark holes. )
Author's Notes
I've had the idea of writing another story about Jo&Kat sitting in my brain since, well, nearly since I finished the first one. I really could see them in my head as if they were part of a SPN spin-off show. My only problem was that I couldn't make the beginning work. First the sequel was going to be a Jo-only story that showed her partnering up with a guy named Brian McKenzie (Named after the actor Ben McKenzie who is from Austin, TX) after a demon possessed and killed his kid. Then, of course, I was going to kill Brian off in some manner that left Jo partially to blame, kind of like what happened between her dad and John Winchester. This would, of course, segue nicely into the next story which would be about Kat running into a newly cynical Jo.
That story never really worked. And neither, unfortunately, did the bridge ficlet composed entirely of emails between Jo and Kat. The only thing that really came of that idea was my decision that Kat's name is Kathryn Tucker. Which is a pretty good name, it's just a shame I haven't had a reason to use it in-story yet.
It all finally came together when I both scrapped the idea of an interlude story and it hit me in mid-season four that the story had to include the angel that was pictured dead in the beginning of 'On the Head of a Pin' and the rest just kind of flowed from there. The angel was never named so I went with Show's habit of naming angels after prophets (Anna and Zechariah). Miriam is Moses' sister and is referred to as a prophet in the book of Exodus (for future reference, the only other female prophets mentioned in the Bible are Deborah, Huldah, and Noadiah and I'm calling dibs on Deborah because she's always been a personal favorite of mine). I don't know a lot about angel lore but me and the Bible are pretty tight.
Ba'al is an ancient Phoenician god of whom the Biblical chroniclers from before the common era were particularly unfond. He seems to have been a big competitor with Yahweh for Israelite worship. Burnt offerings were offered to Ba'al, much like they were offered to Yahweh, and there is no evidence that living people were among those sacrifices. That was my own personal exaggeration on the text which was either derived from a half-remembered passage that referred to another god or was inspired by Elijah's confrontation with Ba'al's priests where Elijah proved that his god was a way bigger pyromaniac than their god.
[Apparently, or, at least according to Wikipedia, the demon Beelezebub was derived from the god Ba'al, though only the Ba'al of a specific city. Ba'al was used to represent a number of gods during the same period and Israelite haters were trying to unleash a little propaganda by calling their enemy's god a demon. And the PR just kind of stuck. However, that information didn't inform my characterization of the demon Ba'al in this story.]
As I'm sure you can imagine, writing this story has been a lot of fun. I'm not entirely sure if another major story about Jo&Kat will ever appear but I wouldn't count them out just yet. These girls have a lot of road yet to travel. After all, they've already helped save the world and their show's only in its second season. Who knows what'll happen next.

Finding Our Own Way: A Jo-Kat Fanmix
1) Shawn Colvin – Summer Dress
I'm gonna go where the lights are bright
Where sacred secrets sail like kites
We've been sleeping girl all our lives
And we never lived we just survived
We never lived we just survived
Are there thieves and beggars saints and liars
2) Joan Jett & the Blackhearts – Change The World
Now I see
Disparity
What needs to be
Hell it isn't charity
It's time we stop all the fightin'
Let's start today
Go find a way
To change the World
Gotta change the world
3) Switchfoot – The Fatal Wound
I am the crisis
I am the bitter end
I'm gonna gun this down
I am divided
I am the razor edge
there is no easy now
4) Thea Gilmore – Gun Cotton
Children in the boxes paint the underpass red
The graffiti on the park bench, the faded A to Z
They’ll make you fat with dreams and sequence on the silver screen
‘Til you’re full of hope and tragedy and crash-site steam
We’re the gun cotton
They’ll blast us all in line
This time
Said, we’re the gun cotton
They’ll blast us all in line
This time
5) Rasputina – You Don’t Own Me
You don't own me, don't try to change me in any way
You don't own me, don't tie me down 'cause I'd never stay
Oh, I don't tell you what to say
I don't tell you what to do
So just let me be myself
That's all I ask of you
6) Rihanna – Disturbia
No more gas, in the red, can't even get it started
Nothing heard, nothing said, can't even speak about it
On my life, on my head, don't wanna think about it
Feels like I'm going insane, yeah
It's a thief in the night to come and grab you
It can creep up inside you and consume you
A disease of the mind, it can control you
It's too close for comfort
7) Sarah Bettens – Not Insane
I told myself today
It's pretty nice to find your way
no matter what you say
I am not insane
For every so-called victory you lose a piece of you
And when it shows you love can be in everything you do
...love can be in everything you do...
8) Fiona Apple – Sullen Girl
And there's too much going on
But it's calm under the waves
In the blue of my oblivion
Under the waves in the blue of my oblivion
9) Flogging Molly – Devil’s Dance Floor
Pressed against her face
I could feel her insecurity
Her mother'd been a drunk
And her father was obscurity
But nothin' ever came
From a life that was a simple one
So pull yourself together girl
And have a little fun
Well swing a little more, little more o'er the merry-o
Swing a little more, a little more next to me
Swing a little more, little more o'er the merry-o
Swing a little more, on the Devil's Dance Floor
10) Linkin Park – Forgotten
There’s a place so dark you can’t see the end
Skies cock back and shock that which can’t defend
The rain then sends dripping / an acidic question
Forcefully, the power of suggestion
Then with the eyes shut / looking thought the rust and rot
And dust / a small spot of light floods the floor
And pours over the rusted world of pretend
The eyes ease open and its dark again
11) Christina Aguilera – Fighter
After all of the stealing and cheating you probably think that I hold resentment for you
But uh uh, oh no, you're wrong
Cause if it wasn't for all that you tried to do, I wouldn't know
Just how capable I am to pull through
So I wanna say thank you
Cause it
Makes me that much stronger
Makes me work a little bit harder
It makes me that much wiser
So thanks for making me a fighter
Made me learn a little bit faster
Made my skin a little bit thicker
Makes me that much smarter
So thanks for making me a fighter
12) The Dixie Chicks – The Long Way Around
My friends from high school
Married their high school boyfriends
Moved into houses in the same ZIP codes
Where their parents live
But I, I could never follow
No I, I could never follow
I hit the highway in a pink RV with stars on the ceiling
Lived like a gypsy
Six strong hands on the steering wheel
I've been a long time gone now
Maybe someday, someday I'm gonna settle down
But I've always found my way somehow
