Jul. 16th, 2009 11:23 pmDid you guys know that I almost bought a house? Well, not almost, I suppose, but I talked to a realtor and put in a bid and everything. It was a nice little yellow house with a wonderfully large back yard that was at that perfect point between country and city, a little bit out of the way from traffic and noise but not so far that going to the grocery store would be a huge endeavour.
My whole plan was to buy it on a land contract (it was a foreclosure home that a local public entity had purchased and refurbished) but it was one of the few homes for which the sellers demanded a mortgage and, well, it's really not the right time for me to do something like that. So I didn't buy the home after all.
Which is all probably for the good. It was a little on the small side, had high radon levels in the basement and a possible carpenter ant infestation. I'm not entirely sure that energy star appliances, original wood floors, more closet space than the Queen, or the garden of my dreams would compensate for that. Plus, it was a little on the small side.
Anyway, there'll be houses for sale next year when I'm out of law school. I'll look again then.
Also, here's a fun/cute story. Two weeks ago the Mum and I went to Greenfield Village. I haven't been there since I was a kid so it was fun to go and walk around, ride the train, and see what had changed and what hadn't. We had tea at the Cotswold Cottage and saw the Illinois county courthouse where Abraham Lincoln first practiced law (the docent told a fun story about how Henry Ford got the courthouse but I'll save that for another time). We had some time to kill before we had to pick the Da up at the airport (he had been at a BSA camp in New Mexico all week) so on a whim I pulled out my iPod and turned on
baylorsr's excellent podfic of A Family Business. The Mum enjoyed it a lot. We weren't able to listen to more than a chapter or two since the Mum got a little lost from paying too much attention to the story and not enough to where we were going, but it was a lot of fun. We had a long talk afterwards about storytelling and writing and I had the very surreal experience of hearing the phrase "Dean and Sammy" come out of my mother's mouth.
I don't think she's going to suddenly fangirl out over SPN (it's really not her kind of show) but she did ask for the CD so she could listen to the rest of the story. Mostly it was just nice to be able to share a little piece of my other life with a member of my family. It helps makes things seem a little less one or the other.
So, there you go. And now I'm going to bed because it's late and I'm sleepy. Toodles!

Date: 2009-07-19 04:10 pm (UTC)Actually, I was really happy the financing didn't work out because the more I talked about things with the realtor the more I could feel money just bleeding out of my pores. It was really overwhelming.
But now I have some time and space so who knows what will happen. I still want that garden I was dreaming about, so maybe someday ...
