Jan. 22nd, 2009 10:42 pmI am a posting fool today.
I was pleased with this episode. I'm fond of this Julie Siege chick, I think she can stay around in the writers' room for a while. She's a keeper. 4x12 was a good, steady MOTW with good structure that didn't try to do too much but still had room to tell a story about a group of old magicians and more the season myth-arc a few more paces forward. Instead of a rain of anvils we only got one anvil in the last scene, which is par for the course with Show. As I said, I am pleased.
We're obviously heading to a place where the boys have to choose doing the "right" thing or betraying each other. Good times. As a sufficiently sadistic fangirl I can't wait to be raked across the emotional coals of that arc's culmination.
So, do you think that they were counting up how many times Standards and Practices would let them say "douch" on TV?
hiyacynth thinks so and I agree. It's like a game that Kripke likes to play, to see how many words he can just slip by. He's a giant, 12 year-old dork and I love him for it.
It's nice to see Sammy embracing his inner devilbaby once again. Not nice in the sense that I think he should or that it will end well, but rather nice in the way that it'll cause everything to come crashing down around their feet and lead to the oncoming fraternal confrontation. I liked their conversation about growing old, it once again highlighted the big differences between Sam&Dean. Sam really does think that there's a time when evil will be gone from the world and he won't feel an obligation to fight it. Dean's seen enough evil to know that no matter who or what you kill there's always going to be something else to hunt. Their differences and similarities fascinate me and I love how we can still see the core of Sam, the things we learned about him all the way back in season one, even after everything he's been through and how much he's changed. Oh, Sammy.
HA! Bleeker Street! Do you think they were in Newford? I kind of think they were in Newford. *happy sigh* Canadian urban fantasy authors FTW. ;-)
I really liked Charlie namechecking Barnum and saying that that's who he got the grimoire from. mmmm Americana, I love you best. And, thankfully, Show didn't go in a Whedon direction with Dean's crack simile. Because it's not about being a strung-out junkie, it's about being strong enough to reject the easy road, the thing that might feel good but isn't. The immortality spell was a good metaphor for Sam's devilbaby powers. Heck, I was tempted, and I know how badly things like that always work out. Just think of it, getting to spend eternity with your very best friends? I would definitely be tempted by that. Just like it's super-tempting to want to use those devilbaby powers to stop the evil in the world. I can really empathize with Sam, I can. And he's also very much his father's son.
See this, all of this, is why I'm so painfully addicted to this show. These characters, they just keep on pulling me back in and I'm powerless to resist. I guess it's like crack that way. =D
