Feb. 19th, 2008 01:57 pmFirst: Prompts are still up for grabs over at the SPN Crossover Challenge. Stories aren't due until March 10 (a date which is subject to extension) so you have plenty of time ... *hint hint*
I watched an episode of Kyle XY last night. I know, I know. In my defense, it was that or be subjected to a Smallville commentary. The
baylorsrs can be cruel and demanding women. Anyway, at least it proved to me that my feminism isn't completely dead. See, there's this girl on the show, kind of the female counterpart to the male "superhero" title character. Except, she's not a counterpart. She's untrustworthy and obsessive and Kyle was frequently told in the episode I saw that if he doesn't protect her from herself she'll self-destruct. The whole thing made me extremely uncomfortable, because, obviously, a smart, talented woman would need a man to enforce limits on her, that women aren't capable of taking care of themselves. When a woman is more talented than a man she must be reeled in and "protected" from herself.
Yeah, the paternalism is strong with that show.
There is one amusing thing about the show. Okay, not so much the show itself but the communal reaction to it. See, the female character's father figure is played by the guy who was the bad guy in second season Dark Angel, Ames, or something (like I'd know his name, we just call him 'Dark Angel'). We have had the exchange, more than once, about how they shouldn't trust him because he's obviously evil and the only good thing he ever did was put Alec in a cage. heeeee
And we watched the first episode of Jericho. My reaction was thus: ( Respect My Authoritie )
In sum: I am a dirty hippie. =D It's a good way to be.
ETA: I have extra copies of the first ten issues of the BtVS season 8 comics, free to a good home. If anyone wants them, let me know.
