First: Prompts are still up for grabs over at the SPN Crossover Challenge. Stories aren't due until March 10 (a date which is subject to extension) so you have plenty of time ... *hint hint*

I watched an episode of Kyle XY last night. I know, I know. In my defense, it was that or be subjected to a Smallville commentary. The [livejournal.com profile] baylorsrs can be cruel and demanding women. Anyway, at least it proved to me that my feminism isn't completely dead. See, there's this girl on the show, kind of the female counterpart to the male "superhero" title character. Except, she's not a counterpart. She's untrustworthy and obsessive and Kyle was frequently told in the episode I saw that if he doesn't protect her from herself she'll self-destruct. The whole thing made me extremely uncomfortable, because, obviously, a smart, talented woman would need a man to enforce limits on her, that women aren't capable of taking care of themselves. When a woman is more talented than a man she must be reeled in and "protected" from herself.

Yeah, the paternalism is strong with that show.

There is one amusing thing about the show. Okay, not so much the show itself but the communal reaction to it. See, the female character's father figure is played by the guy who was the bad guy in second season Dark Angel, Ames, or something (like I'd know his name, we just call him 'Dark Angel'). We have had the exchange, more than once, about how they shouldn't trust him because he's obviously evil and the only good thing he ever did was put Alec in a cage. heeeee

And we watched the first episode of Jericho. My reaction was thus:
The "army" shows up and stops the war between Jericho and New Bern.

"What the hell?! What gives them the authority to fly in and tell them what to do? What is the Cheyenne Government to us?"

A month passes and the occupying force stays, providing security and power with its iron fist.

"The junior senator from Wyoming is their new president? What the fuck. Did anyone in Jericho even agree to let the army stay? Was a vote taken? They can take their occupying force and shove it up their ass. If I were there, every time I'd turn on a light I'd feel like a traitor."

Mimi smacks down the faux-Halliburton goons.

"BOOYAH. Knowing the law is awesome. Suck on that, you nazi bastards."

It's reported that there are two governments, East and West, divided by the Mississippi. The Eastern Government is housed in Columbus, OH.

"OHIO?! No way. There's no way that Michigan would bow to the governance of Ohio. We're totally independent, like Texas, except nobody cares about Michigan.

The lead army officer, Major Berg, seems like a good guy who's trying to make the world a better place.

"And that's why he's so dangerous. Seriously, why should I support or follow you and your warlord superiors. Just because you're a good guy? Whatever, I'm still out there, in the middle of the town square, with my placards and pamphlets protesting your illegal presence in our city."

In sum: I am a dirty hippie. =D It's a good way to be.

ETA: I have extra copies of the first ten issues of the BtVS season 8 comics, free to a good home. If anyone wants them, let me know.

All the survivalists libertarians nuts people who brought Jericho back are up in arms (ahem) again over the new direction of the show with the Evil Not-Real Government imposing order on the town.

I love that IRS lawyer girl who saves her farmboy love's farm.

I also totally understand where Jake is coming from, I don't know why people look at me like I'm crazy when I say "HE KILLED HIS FATHER, HIS LIFE BELONGS TO HIM!!!" what? i'm not civilized or something? whut?

There's nothing all that crazy about Jake. Civilization's a fine line, after all.

And, hey, at least you didn't spend the entire time yelling, "I don't recognize your authority!" And wouldn't shut up about for the entire episode. I am such a damn, dirty hippie. ;-)

If that Smallville commentary was regarding Season 4, (aka The Year of Jason), then you totally should have stuck around for it. Just thinking about Jason Teague is making want to plug in the DVD.

the only good thing he ever did was put Alec in a cage

I think his name was White? Or was that the Season One bad guy? Who cares, really? In addition to the cage (DELICIOUS!) Ames/White/Whatever also tazed Alec (or at least his henchmen did) and shot a microscopic explosive device into the back of Alec's succulent neck. Now I wanna watch THAT show too.

BTW I can't believe you've got SPN/Dark Angel crossover fic on your recs page. Don't you know if I see something like that I have to read it? While smoking many cigarettes at one in the morning and feeling totally bad when it's over and wishing there were more of it?

You need to exercise more responsibility with your recs page.

But it's Smallville and even with Jason Teague my capacity for re-watch is extremely low. Stupid logic portions of my brain and their incapacity to shut themselves off.

Exercise more responsibility? *scoffs* That would totally defeat the purpose of dealing crack. I'm definitely going to have to seek out more DA/SPN. *cackles*
