Fic: A Family Business 1/6
Jul. 16th, 2008 10:27 pmSo, there's this story that I've been talking about for a really long time. I like to call it my Forest Epic, so you may have heard me refer to it by that name. I've been writing it for over a year now, I think, and I decided in May that enough was enough, I was going to finish it over the summer. Now that I suddenly have all of this time on my hands, that's exactly what I'm going to do, and I have a system that's going to help me.
See, as I may have mentioned before, I'm something of a procrastinator, and if I don't have a deadline hanging over my head I'm fairly crap at getting anything done. I have now set one for myself. I'm going to start posting what I have of my story and I will post a part a week, until it's finished. This should give me the motivation I need to stop watching crap on tv and actually write.
This story is something of a milestone for me. It's the longest, most complex story I've ever written. No matter what I'm doing it sits there in the back of my head, coloring everything that I do and see. I plan to do a big post of notes after the last chapter, but there are a few things I need to say up front. First: I once said that all SPN fanfic could be set in Michigan and this is more evidence to support that theory. Second: This never, ever, ever would've been written without
hiyacynth. She's always there, encouraging and supporting and chivvying, when necessary. She's made this a better story and I can't thank her enough for everything she's done and continues to do.
quellefromage has also been of invaluable assistance. She volunteered to beta and has never skimped on asking the hard questions, for which I am eternally grateful. There's also the Baylors, who have had to listen to my disjointed ramblings for a very long time and have yet to lock me up and throw away the key. Seriously, the best of friends, all around.
This is my baby, and I hope you enjoy it.
Title: A Family Business 1/6
Fandom: Supernatural
Disclaimer: I own absolutely nothing. It’s all Kripke’s and the CW’s and blah blah blah. We all know who the real brain trust is around here.
Rating: PG-13
Spoilers: General for the series. Takes place in two time periods, one pre-series and the other situated at some point between 3x04 (Sin City) and 3x05 (Bedtime Stories).
Summary: The Winchesters never stay, and when they go they leave more than burned corpses behind them.
( The car rolled to a grumbling stop )

Date: 2008-07-17 02:37 pm (UTC)I'm sure it's not a shock at all to know that I am anxious. Am worried that I shot myself in the foot posting crack for the past month and a half. And LALALALA my anxieties are really quite boring.

Date: 2008-07-17 02:50 pm (UTC)1. Per Peter Jackson: Fear is a powerful motivator. Which is why you're posting as a WIP--to motivate you to finish it. Which you will do.
2. Don't be phased if there's low response. As we know, many people wait until a WIP is no longer IP to read. Relatedly, remember that even when they're reading a full multi-chapter story all at one go, most people only comment on the final chapter. So don't get discouraged.
3. You are awesome.
That is all :-)

Date: 2008-07-17 03:19 pm (UTC)You are most wise. And generally awesome, of course. I will keep your points in mind and bludgeon said anxiety back into my subconscious, where it belongs.
I think I will go get my oil changed, writing notebook in tow. Distraction is good for the soul.

Date: 2008-07-17 02:48 pm (UTC)Heh - so I'm not the only one to shy away from finishing things? I'm working my way through the last two chapters of a huge "Harry Potter"-tale, and it's like wading through knee-deep mud. *sighs*
And though I'm absolutely not into Supernatural (even Jared Padalecki was not able to change my mind), I really like this tale, and I will follow your posts. Very well written, and thrilling. Can't wait to see what happens next!
