Apr. 27th, 2008 10:53 amYesterday was a momentous occasion, the Big Lug graduated from the University of Michigan. I'm so proud of him I could just about explode. He's just that awesome.
The ceremony was nice, much nicer than my own commencement. It was held on the Diag, which is kind of the central quad on campus, I suppose. In the past commencements have been held at the stadium but it's undergoing some major renovations so the university had to get a little creative. Personally, I think they should continue to have it on the Diag from here on out, it was ever so classy. The sun even decided to come out by the time the Big Name Speaker started (Bob Woodruff, who gave a very nice address) so it turned into a pretty kicking day all around.
My little brother, starting out on his life. Really and truly, I am too proud for words.
After commencement we ate at the Gandy Dancer, the primo restaurant in Ann Arbor. When my dad got his masters he and my mom had reservations there but he was really sick at the time so they couldn't go. Then, when I graduated my mom waited too long to make reservations and there wasn't a seat to be had. We finally got it right and, believe you me, the meal was more than worth the wait. I've finally eaten the kind of food that I've only ever heard about on tv. It was amazing. My only complaint was that we didn't stay for dessert. Yeah, my mom made a cake but as good as her cakes are, I bet the dessert would've been even better. It was the kind of meal where I didn't want to eat anything for hours afterwards because I didn't want to forget how it tasted.
It was a terrific day. Now the Big Lug only has to figure out what he wants to do with his life. He's been talking about moving to Richmond, Virginia with a buddy this summer, so we'll see how that goes. For right now he's driving a university bus and interning with the state Republican caucus (I guess that what you do if you're a poli sci/economics double major).
But yes, proud, proud, proud, so very proud.
On an amusing note, the robes that the university hoi polloi wear during the ceremony look like something straight out of Hogwarts. It's vastly amusing. I shot a picture of the Dean of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts because of his extremely wizardly threads. I was highly entertained.
Am officially on break. Freedom is an awesome feeling. Have to get cracking on all of my chores, however, because the time will fly by faster than I want it to, I'm sure. But for right now I have Doctor Who on the download and spring has sprung. It's going to be a good day.

Date: 2008-04-29 12:01 am (UTC)Ever since that dinner I've wanted more. One day I'll have the resources to spend $100 on a single meal and it'll be the greatest day evar.
=D
