You ever look at what people are saying and think to yourself, 'Are we even watching the same show?' Cause that's how I frequently feel as regards fandom-at-large and Torchwood. It's rather peculiar being so completely out of step. Sorry, it's only that I just watched Wednesday's episode and did not find it nearly as upseting as advertised. It was certainly better than last week's, at least it wasn't boring.

Am amused that there are people who think Jack Harkness is a king of manpain. Honey, no, just, no. John Crichton, Kara Thrace, John, Sam & Dean Winchester, Fox Mulder, they're kings of manpain. I love Jack but the manpain is just not his forte.

Though, as in everything, mileages certainly do vary. So anyone is free to tell me that Gwen is a hateful shrew just as I'm free to disagree with that opinion. =D

There was supposedly some sort of LJ boycott yesterday? Oh, fandom. You're so very earnest about these sorts of things. Please learn to save your battles for things that actually matter. I'd say that fandom needs its own lj-type thingy except fanpeople created journalfen and now it's locked up and you have to 'know' people to be admitted into the special little club. Actually, sounds about par for the course for fandom.

Wow, I'm souding extraordinarily bitchy today. Some days are just like that.

Here, have a Dinosaur Comics wherein the Beach Boys are canonically in love with each other. It made me giggle.

I ♥ you, especially when you think you're being bitchy. You know why? 'Cause you're awesome.

Have spent approximately 14 of the last 20 hours cleaning my apartment. My back is sore.

It's cause we're BOTH so awesome!

You see that? *points to icon* That's the boys watching you as you walk away. They very much appreciate the view.

Oh, man, JOHN CRICHTON! (I just finished season 4. I still have the miniseries. HE BREAKS ME!)

Also, I love lots that Kara Thrace is on your list of kings of manpain.

John Crichton ... yeah. *heavy sigh* He breaks me too, in all the best ways.

And of course Kara Thrace is a king of manpain. She's, like, the textbook definition of a woobie. Turning Starbuck into a woman was one of the best things Ron Moore has ever done.

manpain?

Hmmm, how does one describe manpain? *ponders*

Generally a character who is said to have manpain is one that has a pretty happy-go-lucky attitude, kind of cocky, and doesn't seem to have a care in the world. However, once you dig under the facade you discover that s/he's actually deeply troubled and has issues layered upon issues but never personally addresses them for various reasons. He or she tends to be one of the 'hero' characters in certain types of genre stories.

For example: Mal Reynolds could be considered to be possessed of a deep well of manpain while Wash wouldn't. Simon Tam might have manpain but he's more of a whiny, emo type so it's hard to take his pain too seriously. Lee Adama also suffers from the latter problem.

So, ummm, yes, it is like angst. I'm sure I'm making all of this much more complicated than it needs to be. To paraphrase a Supreme Court justice (though he was talking about obscenity), I can't define manpain but I know it when I see it.

If this is extraordinarily bitchy for you, you must be a very nice girl indeed. :)

This is what we get for being on a blog service whose primary usage is by adolescents. Of any age. (Case in point: us?)

Of course, you do realize all our content is now controlled by Vladimir Putin. not that there's anything wrong with that.

*snorts* Well, to be fair, that's as bitchy as I'd get amongst general company. I can be a bit bitchier in the privacy of close friends and my own brain. Though, granted, even that isn't all that bad. I really am doomed to be a 'nice' girl for the rest of my life.

And if it's not Vladimir Putin controlling my content it's the NSA, so, not all that much of a difference either way. From a certain point of view, that is. ;-)

YAYZ for the Gwen-like! I'm not alone!

And yes oh yes oh yes, Ianto is much more a king of manpain than Jack. Like, a million times more. One doesn't even have to be head-over-heels in love with the man to appreciate that aspect of his character. Jack's just too practical and cutthroat to ever bring the manpain the way Ianto does.

*nods*
