Feb. 13th, 2008 01:39 pmThe WGA strike is over! YAY!!!!!!!1!1!
I am in the midst of dealing with stupid academic administrative rigamarole. Do they even understand how much these petty little issues make me want to quit law school all together? I am not even kidding, you guys. Much more frustration and I'm running away to Mexico.
You probably think I'm joking, don't you?
Instead of thinking about all of that I'm going to talk about my latest story because there are personal aspects that amuse me greatly.
After I joined the
halfamoon I thought, 'Wouldn't it be fun to write that Jo&Kat story you've been thinking about for a while?' And, suddenly that combined with the, 'East Quad is on a hellmouth' story that I've been wanting to write since my Buffy days and BAM I sat down and wrote 700+ words in one go. As many of you can probably gather, I'm not the type of writer generally spews things out like that. It was both amusing and rejuvenating.
Amazingly enough, I was able to insert most of the in-jokes that I wanted to. Sitting around at
hiyacynth's I'd say things like, "Man, I wish I could get the 'crazy knife girl' thing in but it doesn't fit." And then half an hour later I'd fit it in. I got in the bit about my freshman roommate berating loud neighbors (love you, Erin!), Ted Kaczynski, South Caf where my friends and I would gather to take our meals, the fact that the actor who played Gavin is now on Heroes, and the drum circle (a nod to both the U-M campus and The O.C. Unfortunately, the one thing that didn't end up making it was a sentence where Jo sees two guys making out in the stairwell. It was in the first section but when I decided to darken Jo's mood it just didn't tonally fit. I also didn't get Jo&Kat into the North Stacks of the Grad Library. That's okay, leaves room for another Ann Arbor story, some day.
At one point I thought I might send the story into a downward spiral by having the ghost kill Kat. Jo's at that stage where she still has some vaguely romantic notions about hunting that a good tragedy would help ameliorate. Plus, the parallel between that and what happened to Bill Harvelle is too attractive to ignore. However, I decided against it primarily because I wanted to showcase Jo as an effective hunter in her own right. Also I really didn't want to kill off Kat, I like her too much.
One day I hope to write the story where Jo and Kat meet back up. Jo will be more closed-off because she got her partner killed during a hunt and Kat will have to work really hard to get her to open up. I'm not entirely sure what the future will hold for Kat but I do know that she won't be able to stop hunting, not now. Maybe she won't become a hunter, Winchester-style, but she won't ever be 'normal' either.
Strangely enough, Jo's partner who's killed is already played by Ben McKenzie in my head. Man, I'm gonna kill off Ryan Atwood. I suck. =D
Storytelling makes everything better.

Date: 2008-02-20 06:56 pm (UTC)As it was an idea that sprung upon me during the years when I was trying to not seem as crazy as I really am, I didn't really share it around. I think. It's hard to remember. ;-)
Either way, one of these days we'll hear about how East Quad has fallen into a sinkhole and we'll both know the real reason it happened. \o/

Date: 2008-02-14 05:04 am (UTC)I totally want to see more of this universe. Ahem. Also please send Sandy Cohen in to help the Winchesters STAT. And, um, make Jo's partner walk around shirtless and/or in a wifebeater for a long time before you kill him.
kthnks
