Oct. 25th, 2007 10:14 pmAm still surviving. Hopefully said survival will continue indefinitely.
I am eternally indebted to those of you who took the time to validate my existence the other day. You totally gave me the boost I needed to finish that damn paper. I promise I'll reply to all comments in a timely manner because you people rock.
Before that, though, have a need to talk about Supernatural. I know, what a shock.
So apparently there's been this whole, "Wow, there are good demons too" opinion that's been going around ever since Ruby's introduction. I'd like to take this time to come out in strong opposition to that theory. If this episode proved anything it was that that demon chick is out for her own ends and she's happily leading Sam down that road paved with good intentions.
Our show's has done a great job making demons sympathetic, in their own demonic way. We've been shown how demons are remarkably human in many ways; they have similar drives and desires, they have emotions and familial connections, and no one can blame them for wanting to get out of Hell.
However, let's not forget that even if with their human-like characteristics they are still in complete opposition to the human race. Even the completely unambitious, like the Bartender with whom Dean had that scintillating conversation, have still co-opted a living, thinking, breathing person's body for their own ends and are still working to coerce more and more people down to Hell. Yeah, sure, people aren't squeaky clean but would Trotter (OMG, it's Scully's Dad!) really have taken that route without a little demonic suggestion? Who knows, it's the beauty and curse of free will.
And Ruby's still working the master plan something fierce. Was it
abysinnia4077 or
likethesun2 who suggested that she might be Meg? Cause that would make a lot of sense (and would make the Kripke-chip in
hiyacynth's head even freakier). Whether she is or not, she's still out there doing Azazel's work and making sure that Sam Winchester fulfills the master plan in one way or another. That bitch is up to no good and I knew that whole helping rebuild the Colt thing would come back to bite everyone in the ass.
Dean is wrong about the whole 'came back wrong' thing. This Sam is the same Sam he's always been. But, he never would've been tempted down this particular path if Dean hadn't sold his soul to bring him back. The best lies always have a ring of truth to them. Just like Sam's destiny was a load of crap so too is the imperfect resurrection theory. I love and continue to love the way free will comes into play in this show, that actions and choices have consequences but none of the characters are 'destined' to do anything, they make they're own fate. It's one of the authorial touches that continues to bring me much satisfaction. And it's one of the reasons why the demons are still evil, they want to take away humanity's free will, to force it into a specific shape either through possession or domination.
And, tangentially, that bitch Ruby better never go near Bobby again or I will steal the Colt and shoot her with it myself. Fucking shoot her dead.
In closing, the theme of Supernatural really is all the ways in which family is our salvation and our damnation at the same time. I love this show so much it hurts.
You know what? By this time tomorrow I'll be sitting in
hiyacynth's apartment talking about this and so much more. OMG I SO CAN'T WAIT! IT'S TOO EXCITING FOR WORDS! ahem, I should probably do productive things like pack, shouldn't I? Okay, then.

Date: 2007-10-26 03:04 am (UTC)So the show is just messing with my head isn't. I'm a fan of the free-will theme and the idea of Sam and Dean being ordinary humans. They're doing all this so well that I'm good with it even if Sam turns out to be Lucifer himself, but I'd prefer not. But having read a few post-ep posts, now I think I took the show's bait, their tease about Sam being supernatural in nature and I'm just gullible that way. Because it could go either way at this point -- he could still be ordinary or he could be evildestiny!Sam. And I forgot: demons lie.
Yay spn, messing with my head. \o/

Date: 2007-10-26 03:30 am (UTC)It could still go either way. The writers have gotten better and better at letting a season arc play itself out and s.3 promises to be one captivating, engrossing ride. I can't wait to see the way it all goes except I can because I never, ever want it to end.
Demons lie and speak the truth and the writers dangle us like marionettes and watch us dance for their amusement. \o/

Date: 2007-10-26 03:31 am (UTC)And i hope that Sam doesn't let his need to save Dean blind him so that he follows her down the primrose path. I think he's better than that, and i think he'll figure things out in a way that will surprise and possibly disappoint Ruby a lot.
*just my speculation*
Adored Dean and his conversation with the demon-chick. That was *perfect*, and exactly Dean. Just....awesome.
