Grey and Damp
Mar. 3rd, 2004 09:45 amMy thoughts are so dang scattered this morning. It seems the run of eloquence I displayed yesterday has worn itself out, that's only to be expected;-).
The infamous history term paper just got a whole lot easier. I have now decided to do a comparative paper that focuses on the use of fairy tale by society and what role it plays. I'll be looking at medieval fairy tales and then comparing them with their counterparts today. I'm still debating what to focus on, perhaps I'll call it The Renaissance of Magic or something along those lines. What this means for me, however, is that I've already done a great deal of the research I need simply because I've read so many great modern fairy tales in my life, such as the works of Robin McKinley, Charles DeLint, Neil Gaiman and even Guy Gavriel Kay and JRR Tolkien (though their's are more historical in tone). Now I just have to dig up The Tolkien Reader in order to get that great essay the Professor wrote On Fairy Stories. That would make a great secondary source. You've gotta love a subject that allows you to use the Brothers Grimm and Charles DeLint as primary historical documents.
The Pup started barking at his reflection in a mirror yesterday while I was online. It was the funniest thing I've ever seen. My dog is a comic genius;-).
