Aug. 10th, 2006 12:39 pmThere's a great sandwich shop near my workplace that has the best chicken salad I've ever eaten. I tend to get it in a wrap because it's so messy that trying to eat it only with bread has lead to unfortunate circumstances. Disappointingly, the woman who was the best at putting the wraps together hasn't been seen working at the shop for some time now so while the food is still delicious the packaging has suffered.

Have been enjoying the latest installments of HP plagiarism wank. It's difficult for me to understand why anyone would want to plagiarize to write fanfiction, or anything for that matter. On a certain level I can understand doing it for a class or a deadline because there are outside pressures pushing you to succeed and perform to a certain standard but those are excuses I've never been able to buy into. Seeing that A on that paper and knowing that it's there because of all of the hardwork and research and moments of genius is a kind of high that I could never describe. Getting good comments on a story that is your's and knowing that the lines that are being praised came from your own mind is among the most uplifiting experiences I've ever had. Anything else is a cheat and a fake and why deal with the guilt and ignominy by taking the easy way out?
I absolutely understand the need for recognition and praise. No one can tell me that the minute after they post a creative work they don't start compulsively refreshing their email. We all want to be loved and adored because there's something just a little ego-centric about all creators but I know the facsimile will never be as good as the real thing and if I don't have the thing, whatever it may be, that boosts me from one level to another I'll either hone my skills till I have it or be content to live on the level I'm at. It's about that feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction, feelings that I can't imagine that I'd have if my best passages were copied from someone else.
It's nice that even though America's Next Top Model is on hiatus I can still get my daily required intake of crazy bitches. *happy sigh*
Pues, the Wrestler is out of Basic and on his way back to the Great White North. Tomorrow we leave to go camping. I will spend the day driving 424 miles (8 hours, give or take). I can't wait. Driving is my zen, freedom and the open road, there's nothing like it. It's going to be a good weekend.
Finalmente, Comcast is going to give me a year of digital cable and high speed internet for $79. That price is for the entire year. Sometimes you really do shoot and score. *is still bemused*

Like you, I write fanfic for the joy of writing it. I post it because feedback is fun. But I never make the mistake of pretending that it's my very own. It's fanfic darn it. Some of it isn't half bad, a few paragraphs might be mistaken for a paint-by-numbers replica of a Da Vinci, but it just isn't worth going to the trouble of copying out someone else's words unless I'm rewriting a scene from a book or television show and deliberately interweaving new material into an acknowledged source.

Date: 2006-08-15 04:42 pm (UTC)We're honest and we expect other authors to be just as upfront with us. It's always a shame to see that even in a community created to share the things we love that there are snakes in the grass who don't feel the same way.
*sigh* Oh well can't let the partypoopers spoil things for everyone. *toddles off to find more fic* =D
