Ups and Downs
Jan. 10th, 2004 06:20 pmSo, we started painting the BB's bedroom today. There was much rejoicing when all of the weird drawrings were finally painted over and I got to use an electric sander to sand down some of the spackle on the walls. You will not believe how many holes are in those walls and how dingy they are. I don't know how he did it, but he sure made a great big mess out of it all. It's rather impressive, in a sort of way;-).
Yay! The diet is over! The Mum was really ill yesterday from the stupid thing, so it was decided that we'll be going on a modified sort of South Beach Diet. Enough was finally enough! Yay!;-) Another benefit was that the Da and I got to go out and get some Mexican food for dinner last night. I so love beans and rice and chicken enchiladas and these were just perfect. They might have all been stuffed with lard but it was so, very yummy;-).
So, I've watched a couple of DVDs in the past few days, so here are some of my
Can I just say how much I adore The Animatrix? It's perfect. It's exactly what I wanted after seeing the very first movie. Each of the animated shorts is different, yet they all tell powerful and interesting stories about life in the Matrix. All of them were complete unto themselves (though the last one, Matriculated could have used a little more explanation and/or story) and the animation is stunningly beautiful, whether it is traditional or computer. These shorts expanded the mythos of the Matrix and also captivated the imagination, making me think about things and possibilities that I hadn't contemplated before. I really have to go out and buy The Animatrix for my very own.
The Da rented League of Extraordinary Gentleman yesterday, and I was reminded of how underwhelmed I was by the whole thing. The dialogue is generally stilted and/or corny, the plot isn't terribly captivating and the FX are very obviously computer generated. I did enjoy a couple things, even on this second viewing. I just liked Peta Wilson as Mina Harker. She was spot on. I don't usually care for vampires or vampiric identities but she is captivating, a woman both of her time and not. Very intriguing. I also liked the Jekyll/Hyde character. There was a moment, when Jekyll was helping to care for some of the crewmates on the Nautilus, when I realized that I really liked him. He's a decent sort of man, flawed but good who has his own demons to vanquish. The rest of the League left me rather cold, but I would love to know more about Mina and Jekyll/Hyde. I suppose I'll just have to go and buy Alan Moore's graphic novels then, won't I?;-)
A cool coincidence happened today. I was out shopping at Best Buy (where I picked up Blade Runner and Gladiator and only after I bought them did I realize they're both Ridley Scott films. Kind of funny;-) and who should I run in to, but my old friend Amy! I haven't seen her since she got married over a year ago. It was fun to talk to her for a couple minutes and I'm looking forward to getting together with her soon. What was funny was that, apparently, she had been cleaning this week and found an old, old, ancient letter I had sent her and had been meaning to call me. Sometimes I'm almost tempted to believe in fate;-).
Happy, happy Weekend!

Date: 2004-01-12 10:22 am (UTC)The plot was too simple and too illogical. I get kind of tired of always having to turn my brain off. It's almost like I can feel the brain cells turning to mush...
