You know that sinking sensation you get when you've just realized that you've totally screwed yourself? That's how I feel right now. Turns out I shouldn't have done so much Christmas shopping yesterday, because now I have a little over $5 to last me till the 15th. Dangit.

In other, more entertaining news, I watched Narc last night and can happily say that it's a movie I can highly recommend, without even having to turn my brain off to do so;-).

I really liked this movie. I mean I really, really liked this movie. The acting is strong and the plot is intense and well-served by the script and direction. It's the story of a Detroit cop who is killed in a drug bust and of how the investigation effects the cops who are assigned to it. At its heart Narc is about human weakness and the path we all tread to try and redeem ourselves for our mistakes.

Perhaps what I admire the most is the way in which we get a real feeling for the officers' humanity. This isn't your Law & Order style drama. It's dark and bitter and exemplifies how difficult and dangerous life as a police officer is. There aren't many movies that so successfully capture the light and dark we all carry within us.I've also been re-reading The Galatic Milieu Trilogy and The Saga of Pliocene Exile all by the delightful Julian May.

I really don't know why I love this story so much. Ms. May hasn't written some grand opus here, it's simply an engaging, adventurous story with fully developed characters. Heck, what more do you need in a story, after all? Both series explore a future wherein humanity has been accepted into a galctic organization and the problems it then has to deal with. Oh yeah, and they also have nifty psychic powers;-). We humans really are a perverse bunch and we don't deal very well with utopia, do we?

It's amazing how much time I find to read or watch movies and yet I never seem to have enough time to accomplish everything I need to. What a strange conundrum;-).

I have a whole slew of these this week, so let's just get started;-).

Living History by Lizbeth Marcs. Liz is one of the great BtVS writers out there, she has both a deep understanding of the characters and great skills as a writer. Plus she's damn funny. Living History emphasizes all of her strengths while telling a rousing story about a band of people from the future who fall into the Scoobies lives. This is a post-Chosen story that takes place in Cleveland, so spoilers definitely abound. Now that you are warned, just go and read it and then read everything else that Liz has ever written.

Once More Into the Urple Depths of OFUM by Camilla Sandman. This is a sequel to that seminal work of LotR hillarity The Official Fanfiction University of Middle-earth and a worthy successor to that great story. Want to see our beloved characters finally getting back at all of the atrocities they're plagued with by the thoughtless hordes of Mary Sue creating minions? Then this is the story for you. Be warned, do not drink while reading this story, as you will be caused to spray liquid on your computer screen at some point in the process.

Suedom by Andy and Saphie. This is another take on the whole fandom, Mary Sue phenomenon that has sprung up ever since FotR came out. The story of two 'normal' teenage Tolkien-fans who get pulled into Middle-earth against there will in order to save it and all the poor hapless girls trapped in various Mary Sues' bodies. The story is both hillarious and poignant and only gets better as time goes on. Plus, it doesn't hurt that the latest chapter has a cameo by a certain Sam-loving OFUM hobbit student (*ahem*, your's truly;-). It just doesn't get much better then this;-).
