May. 10th, 2005 10:20 amAs I'm sure most of you already know, the trailer for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe has appeared online.
I can't wait to see this. The trailer looks good and I am hopeful. I'm not a book purist by any stretch of the imagination. I'm never a book purist, just so long as the movie tells a good story and tells it skillfully I'm one happy li'l camper. I've been thinking that it might be fun if we organized a joint rereading of Lewis's opening chapter in his Chronicles of Narnia opus. Perhaps a little closer to December we can all get together and reenter that marvelous world. It's funny, one of the things that shocked me the most about the trailer was how young the children are. I think that those characters have kind of grown up in my head as I have gotten older. I guess they really were a formative part of my young psyche. I cannot wait for this movie to come out.
This feels like a bad year for movies. I look at the things that are coming out and I'm less then enthused. Here's hoping that some of the Oscar bait movies coming out in November and December are at least vaguely interesting. Well, if nothing else this year will give me the chance to make a sizeable dent in my Netflix queue.
Have begun the next reading cycle with Religion in the Ancient Greek City by Louise Bruit Zaidman and Pauline Schmitt Pantel. May the learning commence.
Oy, I have no Narnia icons. This must be rectified.

Date: 2005-05-10 02:44 pm (UTC)P.S. It was Mr. Tumnus, all shirtless and with his lovely little scarf. Have you seen the oodles of high-quality screen captures? If I retrace my steps, I think I can find the link again.
And, yep, Lucy really threw me, but they're right. She's, what, seven maybe?

Date: 2005-05-10 02:55 pm (UTC)The Narniathon is on! Well, not on as in we're starting right now, more on as in it will happen in ... October? I should figure that out.
Ooooo, pretty screencaps. Will go plunder for icons.
slight spoilers, but seriously, is there anyone reading this who hasn't read the stories?
Date: 2005-05-10 03:52 pm (UTC)October sounds about right. They're quite short, really.
And I totally agree with you about LWW being the perfect gateway into the world. Part of what I love about the original sequence is that you get to go back to places you miss (ah, the Golden Age of Narnia!!) and/or discover what roles people have/had (Diggory, as a prime example) in later/earlier events. What a thrill it was to realize that Professor Kirke was among Narnia's first visitors. And how much more do you love the old Wardrobe when you learn its history?

Date: 2005-05-10 04:08 pm (UTC)Exactly. The end of MN isn't nearly as exhilirating if you don't know why the wardrobe is so important or how cool Professor Kirke is. That book's main purpose is to answer questions you might have about Narnia, not introduce you to the world. And as much as I love A Horse and His Boy it makes no narrative sense to sequence it right behind LWW. It disrupts the very strong arc that flows between LWW, Prince Caspian and Dawn Treader

Date: 2005-05-10 05:56 pm (UTC)There's some sort of Kosmic Karma Krap out there that is laughing it's head off about how I've become a Donnie Wahlberg fangirl. The pseudo-irony is overwhelming.
