End of Week Shenanigans
Nov. 15th, 2003 12:34 amSo, another end to another week. Once again, there has been very little happen on which I can comment. When I'm driving I always tend to think of interesting things to talk about (I drive a lot so I have oodles of thinking time during any given day;-) so there has to be something I can dig out of my poor, addled head;-).
I'm either insane, or I've been living in Michigan for much too long, but I've actually been enjoying the cold weather that's suddenly come upon us. There's something very refreshing about a cold breeze, something...pure about a clear sky on a cold day. I'm actually looking forward to winter, I think I must have finally gone and cracked.
I saw a great, entertaining, satisfying movie tonight. If you haven't seen it then run, do not walk to the theater and see Master and Commander: Far Side of the World. I don't think I've seen a nautical movie that I've found quite so satisfying before. Don't get me wrong, I was very entertained by Pirates of the Carribean earlier in the summer, I liked it a lot for completely different reasons. That was a fun-filled adventure with entertaining characters and an exciting plot. Master and Commander was also exciting and entertaining and it completely transported me to the time and environment I was viewing on the screen. The movie runs the gamut of shipboard life, the speed with which one can go from mind-numbing monotony to brain-sucking terror in less then a moment. Sitting in the audience, I felt as if I were a member of the HMS Surprise's crew (if they had allowed women onboard, that is;-), a crew full of heroes and cowards and survivors.
The movie was served by a great cast, a great script, great direction, pretty much great everything. Every small detail was lovingly crafted, every performance was spot on. With very little effort I as transported to the nineteenth century and for that I am extremely grateful.
Besides seeing movies and suddenly going crazy, I've also had the chance to read a new story this week. It had me engrossed for two or three days, which by my standards is nearly an eternity. So...
I'm not the biggest Harry Potter fan, as anyone who knows me will attest to. Oh, I don't hate the books, I'm just not as passionately involved in them as so many other people are. Shoot, I haven't even read the fifth book yet (I know, I know, blasphemy;-). However, I've finally fallen in love with a Harry Potter story. Well, to be precisely accurate, a Harry Potter/Dark is Rising Crossover. It is Harry Potter and the Legacy of the Light by Gramarye. A great yarn which somehow manages to seamlessly meld the two different worlds into one and emphasize all the bits I love from each 'verse. If you like either series of books I highly recommend you read this bit of fanfiction, I can promise there will be something in there you will love.
Just so people don't think that all I read is fanfiction, I did buy an actual book today;-). I'm looking forward to really starting in on Wicked by Gregory Maguire. I've been wanting to read this book for a while.
Phew, that's a lot of nonsense to ramble on about. Must be all the caffeine I drank today, it's making me all jumpy and random;-).
