The news today is definitely making up for the lack of any interesting reporting yesterday. Today we've got whispers of an Iraq war movie, hints of goings-on in the world of Batman and violence-inducing words from the mouth of George Lucas.

It's always interesting to look back at the great World War II classics that were produced during the war itself and right after the event. The Hollywood machine was in overdrive in those days, spinning out new movies focused on contemporary events faster then contemporary studios could dream of doing today. Of course, domestic acceptance of that war was much greater then acceptance for the present War in Iraq is, so it is no wonder that Hollywood has dragged its heals in financing a look at our modern war. That is all about to change as production company Benderspink has announced they will be financing Blowback an Iraqi War movie to be written by Sheldon Turner. It's about time that Hollywood got into the debate.

The movie adaptation of Peter S. Beagles fantasy classic The Last Unicorn has finally gotten itself a director. Apparently they've nabbed Geoff Murphy, a Kiwi who worked as a second unit director on Lord of the Rings. This is a rather appropriate move, as both properties have much in common. While the books themselves are very different, they were both first adapted into less then successful animated movies and it's because of Lord of the Rings's success that The Last Unicorn is being made. Also, Christopher Lee is appearing in both of them. This all sounds very promising, and I'm going to have to go dig up a copy of Beagle's book and give it another read through. This is rather exciting stuff.

The videogame Doom is being turned into a movie. I've never played it, but I hear that it's quite the exciting game (or so they say). The latest news has made me excited to see the movie, at the very least. Karl Urban (Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Riddick and The Bourne Supremacy) has been signed to play the lead. Good for Karl, I'm glad to see that his career is really taking off. I hope he remembers to send Peter Jackson something really nice for Christmas this year.

They're turning Alvin and the Chipmunks into a live action/animated movie (ala Garfield)? WTF?! I wish movie companies would stop raping the icons of my childhood because Alvin and Company might not have been of the highest quality but I adored them when I was a kid. I watched the cartoons, I listened to the songs, I saw the animated movie in the theater. My love was true, damnit, and now the studios are trying to wring blood out of a stone and make a profit on my childhood nostalgia. I hate them so very, very much.

I also hate George Lucas. His Star Wars prequels leave much to be desired, his Special Edition of the original Star Wars movies tinkers with things best left untinkered and he obviously doesn't at all care what his fans think of the process. I dare anyone to go and read his interview about the recent release of his Special Editions on dvd and not leave it with a heart full of hatred for Lucas and his arrogance.

Now, I never endorse the downloading of movies, it's just not something I like, but in Lucas's case I'll make an exception. I hear that if you go over to supernova.org and look under their movies/scifi section you may be able to download a copy of the original trilogy that was ripped from the laser-disc edition. I say go forth and bootleg.

To cleanse my palette, here's some good news in the form of the Batman Begins movie that is nearly done shooting. Christian Bale has some great things to say about being Batman and the depth of the character. Bale just gets it, he's made me even more jazzed to see this movie, which might just turn out to be even better then Tim Burton's Batman movies were.

There's also been a report from Toronto on the sets and costumes and vehicles being used in the movie that just sound awesome. I'm so excited that I'm bouncing in my chair.

Finally today, some TV news. The executive producer of Showtime's Jeremiah a show that I always wanted to see more of, but which I could never seem to catch, is talking about the possibilities of the show continuing past the second season finale which airs on Sept. 24. I always liked the concept of this show, recovery from a generation destroying plague, and the fact that it was created by J. Michael Straczynski (though he left the show after the second season was filmed) just made the idea even more appealing. I'm pleased to hear that the producers are still committed to the show, even if Showtime isn't, and I'd be interested to hear where they take it next.

Also, the news from the world of Alias is also bright. Apparently, Will Tippin will be showing up for at least a few of the season 4 episodes. Yes! I'm so watching cause Will is not only tied for my favorite character on Alias (I won't let he and Jack Bristow actually fight for first place, as I know that would only lead to bad things for Will;-) but he is also one of my favorite characters from any show, ever. Now I'm bouncing in my seat with a big ol' chessy grin slapped across my face.
