Jul. 26th, 2009 12:44 pmThere's some interesting Vortex news coming out of Comic Con.
The big news from yesterday, IMHO, is that Dominic Monaghan is joining the cast of Flash Forward. The show is based on a sci-fi novel by Robert J. Sawyer, exec produced by David S. Goyer (Batman Begins and Blade) and Brannon Braga (of Star Trek: Voyager fame) and already stars Joseph Fiennes, John Cho (Sulu in Star Trek), Jack Davenport (better known as Commodore Norrington), and Genevieve Cortese (our very own Ruby). If the Vortex were to actually create a television show it would probably look a lot like this.
V is getting quite a bit of buzz. I'm curious enough to check it out (especially since I've never seen the original miniseries). It's exec produced by Scott Peters (The 4400) and stars Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost), Morena Baccarin (Firefly), Joel Gretsch (The 4400), and Alan Tudyk (Firefly).
Also, apparently Kirk Acevedo is no longer going to be a regular on Fringe. WTF? I mean, I don't watch the show anymore so there may be a plausible reason for it. But how do you get rid of Kirk Acevedo? It all seems a little hinky to me.
I did not know that The Vampire Diaries pilot was co-written by a woman named Julie Plec. That's kind of awesome! And she had to convince Kevin Williamson to come on board the project. It sounds like it's her baby and she only needed a Big Name to get the studio to come on board. I always celebrate women making genre shows so good for her. If studios are going to make big money off of vampires it's about time a woman other than the authors got in on the action.
[And yes, I know Catherine Hardwicke directed Twilight but the speed with which Summit kicked her to the curb was distinctly off-putting. Because a woman should never order anyone around, even when she's the director of a movie.]
Apparently Paul Bettany is starring in a movie called Legion that's some kind of western with angels fighting angels. I am intrigued. It co-stars Kevin Durand (better known around these parts as a certain dogman in Dark Angel) and Adrienne Palicki (aka Jess).
District 9 looks very intriguing. I have an awful feeling that it'll be harder to watch emotionally than your average sci-fi/action extravaganza but that's Peter Jackson for you.
In some final Vortexian news, while watching The X-Files on Friday I kept on wondering where I'd seen one of the guest actors before. He looked like the prison rapist guy from Shawshank Redemption but I couldn't tell for sure. When I IMDb'd him (his name is Mark Rolston) I discovered that not only was he the guy from Shawshank but that he'd been in pretty much every genre television show ever created, from Star Trek:TNG to Dark Angel, including a certain CW show that I watch where he was the original actor who portrayed a certain demonic nemesis in season four (I'm being coy because spoilers make the baby Sammy cry).
I don't think the name of my Vortex tag has ever been more apropos. One day I will be able to harness the power of the Vortex and make it do my bidding. Oh what a day that will be.
