Who here wants to here about the Liptonrm Family Thanksgiving Spectacular?

Ha! Well, tough cookies, you're going to hear about it anyway. *snerk*

It all began on Wednesday when the Wrestler came home and ripped my Obama bumper sticker off my car. After that we went to see the new Bond movie, so the day wasn't a total waste (and I got a new bumper sticker from [livejournal.com profile] baylorsr, so there. pfffbt)

Thursday began normally enough with me missing breakfast and then slaving away in the kitchen baking for the rest of the day. The Mum and I managed to set the oven on fire at one point (always remember to take the aluminum foil with the pie drippings on them out of the oven after you're done making pies. Fewer flames that way)

Then the Da undercooked the turkey. Luckily he realized that pretty quickly and put it back in the roasting oven to cook. But he proceeded to serve the dressing from the undercooked turkey to the rest of us. Thankfully, none of us got sick (not even our guest, I think) because we were all eating the cornbread stuffing that was cooked with the extra turkey breast in the grill outside. Thank goodness for the Mum's insistence that we have lots and lots of turkey leftovers.

It was funny when the Da realized about an hour after the guest left that he might have poisoned us all. Good going there, Da. ;-)

The day would have been memorable enough, but the true crazy wouldn't start until after the Wrestler left to go back to Ypsilanti.

The Mum was upset all week because the Wrestler told her that he wouldn't be staying in Our Hometown for the entirety of the weekend. Her disappointment was extra-powerful because the Big Lug wasn't able to come up from Richmond for the holiday (the bane of powerless, low-level bureaucrats everywhere).

At some point after the Wrestler left but before I did, the Big Lug called the Mum to commiserate. He proceeded to tell the Mum that not only had the Wrestler left becase he had a date with a girl (gasp and horror, he left her house to see some girl) but said girl happens to be African-American.

Cue an upsurge of closeted racism in the Mum that I have only seen the barest hints of over the years. Both she and the Big Lug were disapproving and the Mum made the Big Lug talk her through looking up the Wrestler's date's facebook page. The Mum doesn't really know how to use the internet but when the Big Lug suggested that she ask me to help her out the Mum refused to call me upstairs, probably because I would've brought sane thought and rationality to the proceedings.

I didn't know that any of this was going on. I'd completely worn myself out helping with Thanksgiving and was sitting on the couch downstairs, blindly staring at the television, waiting for Mum to get off the phone so I could go home.

She came eventually downstairs in a deceptively calm mood and saw me off. About a half-hour after I got home the Big Lug called and told me all about everything that had happened. I was frustrated and eye-rolly but I didn't realize the extent of the Mum's crazy. A little while after that I went to bed and a little while after that I got back up to take a vicodin so I could actually fall asleep.

Midnight rolled around and my phone rang. It was the Wrestler so I rolled out of bed and picked it up. He'd gotten a phone call from the Mum where she ranted and raved about him going home early and he wanted to know how upset she really was. I eventually spilled the beans about everything, except the facebook stalking (let's not forget, I was ridiculously high at the time). Both he and I thought the whole thing was absurd and I eventually went back to bed.

When I called the Mum on Friday I got the full extent of the crazy and, man alive, was it disgusting. I'm not going to repeat here some of the horrible things she said, suffice it to say that I'm quite ashamed of a number of my family members. Some of the Mum's issues stem from the fact that the Wrestler has always kept things close to the chest and she's worried that he's going to move away and never see his family again. She also doesn't trust any of her children to make adult decisions for themselves. But things never would have spun out of control if she didn't have lingering racist attitudes that she refuses to purge.

In sum: Anyone who says that racism is over because Obama was elected needs to come meet my family. Because the Mum was a vocal and active Obama supporter and she still does things like this.

Once again, I get to be the adult in the family. Christmas is just going to be awesome. *facepalms*

On a brighter note, spent Friday with the Baylors. We decorated stockings in the evening and [livejournal.com profile] baylorsr and I had a wonderful day of buying shoes and talking about crazy fannish things. It was delightful. It was a long day but a good one. All hail fangirls and their incredible power to make life better.

And all hail pie. Pie makes the world go round. nom nom nom nom =D

HAIL PIE!!!

Also, age and adult behavior have NEVER gone hand-in-hand. I'm glad the stuffing didn't kill you and that you have shoes.

Shoes are critical to the survival of our species.

Hmm, sorry about your family. They sure put you in a tough position. But yay for shoes and fannish things. And decorating stockings. That sounds like a good idea... :)

It's always a little fascinating and frightening to see the aspects of our parents that we never suspect are there. One of my brothers married a Japanese woman. Everyone in the family absolutely loves her because she's a wonderful person. But it was clearly hard for my dad to accept this. He never said anything against her but he did make lots of loud statements about how absolutely okay he was with his son marrying a japanese person. Her parents, on the other hand, completely freaked out and disowned her.
