So, I was at the Chicago SPN Con this weekend. Who wants to touch me?

Actually, I felt so crappy for most of the weekend that I hardly did anything at all. I missed all of the panels except Richard Speight's. Yes, that means that I spent Jared&Jensen's panel lying on a couch in the hotel bar. I tried to go in, I really did, but the wall of sound that was coming out of the ballroom convinced me that I really didn't have the wherewithall to suffer through it, even for the boys.

But now, it's the day after and I really regret not doing a lot of stuff. Which is the nature of the beast when dealing with some stupid fucking chronic illness. So, whatever. In much better news, there was a whole hell of a lot that I really, really, really enjoyed during the con that I got to do.

Like how hiyacynth, baylorsr and I stayed in a penthouse suite with a bunch of other fangirls and had ridiculous amounts of fun. baylorsr wowed the room with her SPN versions of Life and Jeopardy. It was that group of girls who coined the phrase "canonical necrophilia" and asked the question in the Jared panel that totally forestalled any truly crazy questions that might have come because of this week's episode (because, you know, it was a joke, in case anyone didn't get that). It was just generally awesome to sit around and talk about fannish things and debate and squee and be totally fabulous together.

If you want stories about celebrity encounters you can't do much better than the Baylor Sister and Cousin. I swear, they live under some sort of freakish con star and I don't know whether to be bemused or jealous or what. I think I'll settle for quiet amuseument and 0_0.

Watched Thursday's episode with baylorsr and hiyacynth, the first time we've ever watched a first-run episode together. We were very tired by the time we got to it but it was a lot of fun. I don't think I have very much to add to the internet discussion at large about the episode, but I will share that when Sam and Ruby had their whole scene, you know the one I'm talking about, all three of us were going, "OMG SO WRONG OUR EYES AUUUUGH" and when it was over we immediately had to rewatch it.

I am amused by the people who didn't see the Sam/Ruby coming. It's been pretty freaking blatantly subtextual. Thank you Sera Gamble for pointing out the creepy wrongness of it all and yet still going there. And the things it says about Sam's headspace during those lonely months, just, gah, Sammy you poor, dear, fucked up boy.

I have a ton of comments I haven't replied to yet, and I apologize for the lagtime. It's been a crazy couple of weeks and will only be getting crazier as finals are coming and I have some serious catch-up to do. So if you don't see me you can totally assume that's what I'm doing. Stupid law school.

Because we're lame and totally forgot to talk about it on our ljs? I bet you can imagine the shrieking that occurred when we found out Skip was going to be there.

And he was awesome. He was funny and personable and had all sorts of great stories to tell. The best one was one he told in response to a question from baylorsr. I'm a doofus and can't remember her exact question but I can't forget his story. Apparently, wen he was cast as Skip not much was known about the guy. The writers/producers even thought he was from Florida, if you can believe it. So Richard took it on himself to call Don Malarkey, who told him that Skip was from Tonawanda, and then he called every Muck in the Tonawanda phone book. None of those panned out so he called the Chamber of Commerce and told them about what he was doing and why he was trying to find Skip Muck's family.

A short while after Richard got to England he got a phone call from a woman who was calling on behalf of her mother to find out why he wanted to know about her mother's brother. Apparently, the Muck family didn't know anything about Stephen Ambrose's book or the series that was in production. So Richard told her all about it and they ended up sending him old letters and personal information about Skip. Richard was then able to go to the writers and tell them, "Hey, you've got it all wrong, this is what he was really like."

Richard also helped the Muck family get all of Skip's medals reinstated because they had never received them. They also didn't know how Skip had actually died, they'd only received a telegram informing them of his death, so Richard had the unenviable task of giving them that information as well. The family also got Skip's original jumpwings. He'd sent them to his girl right after graduating from jump school and she mailed them back to his family all of those years later.

Everything about Band of Brothers really was remarkable and obviously really touched everyone involved in the project.

Apparently Cynthia told me many times and I was so jealous I wiped it from my brain. Or something.

Oh, wow, so awesome. And yay for taking an effort for accuracy there! Such a cool story. [and, wow, given how much Ambrose interviewed Malarkey, it's kinda sad how much they got wrong about Skip at first - I'm sure Ambroses' book said Skip was from Tonawanda]

Yes please link to this comment. This is the sort of story that should be shared with everyone, whether they love BoB or not. baylorsr said it gave her goosebumps when he was telling it because, yeah, it's just incredible the lengths the people involved in that project went to.

Well, Richard only mentioned the one Tonawanda but he did say that there were something like 13 Mucks in the phonebook and none of them were related enough to Skip to know who he was.
