The next time I say things like, 'OMG, it's so nice to have so much free time' someone needs to remind me that even though I'm not in school there are such things a family obligations and holiday jobs and finishing all of the things I put off during my crazy period.

So I have had a pretty busy couple of days. On Sunday we went down to Dearborn to visit La Grandmere. Yes, we drove through a blizzard. As my father said repeatedly, "You know you're in Michigan when there's a snow storm, the roads are bad, and everyone is driving 65 MPH." I kind of love being from Michigan.

Obviously, spoilers? )

The visit with La Grandmere went well. We all chatted, exchanged Christmas gifts, and she gave me some of her wedding crystal. Apparently in 1943 the one thing that was easily available for weddings was crystal, or so she said. Either way, it's a very pretty set and I'm tickled to have it.

While I was wrapping it up she talked to me about a program she's been involved with through her Baptist church. They're apparently having a kind of religious exchange with the Arabic community in Dearborn. I'm not entirely certain of the details but at the very least it seems to be fostering understanding between the communities, my very white grandmother's community receiving the greater portion of such. She kept on telling me things like, "Arabic people come from more than one country," and "Muslims believe in God," as if they were huge revelations. I very diplomatically didn't say, "Well, yeah, duh" or anything like that. Baby steps. Sometimes it's all about baby steps.

Today was the Mum's 60th birthday so spent most of it baking her a cake. The Da took us all out to a nice sushi/hibachi restaurant in celebration. The food was tasty, especially the sushi, and the mushrooms. My only regret was that I couldn't finish everything they put in front of me. Happy Birthday, Mum.

Okay, tonight and tomorrow is all about getting back on track with all of my other plans. Unfortunately, I've had to excise Christmas cookie baking from the list. I usually send them out with my holiday cards but I just don't have the time this year. And blah blah blah, time to stop staring at the wall and get motivated. Break isn't that long, after all.
