liptonrm_backupThe Passion of the Christ is still dominating the box office charts and not even the Depp was able to roust it from the mountain to take his turn as king. The entire box office listings can be found here and I'm sure you'll all note that RotK is still riding high in the Top Ten. It's good to be a fan;-).
I think all fans of science fiction both love and hate the movies of that genre. We love them for the spectacle they produce and the ideas they generate and we hate them because they're never quite able to reproduce our most cherished novels in the right way. Now that great example of Golden Age sci-fi, I, Robot is coming to the silver screen and even the fact that it's starring Will Smith hasn't lessened my optimism about this movie. See, I actually like Will Smith and think he might do a decent job here. From the look of the trailer it's going to be one of your big budget, sci-fi action extravaganzas but I hope that it retains some of the questions about humanity and identity that have caused the book to be so beloved.
That crack dealer Robert Jordan is about to get a whole lot richer. That's right, ladies and germs, a production company has optioned the whole kit and kaboodle and The Wheel of Time will be coming to movie screens near all of us sometime in the future. I have ranted about these books before and I will rant about them again and I can only hope that the possibility of big screen success will force the author to just finish the series already. Damn the man, he's going to give me an aneurysm one of these days. I can't wait to see who they cast, I really, really can't;-).
To finish off the book to screen trifecta is news of casting being done in the SciFi Channel mini-series adaptation of Ursula K. LeGuin's famous fantasy series. The mini-series will actually be an adaptation of the frist two books in the series, A Wizard of Earthsea and The Tombs of Atuan and apparently will be starring Isabella Rossellini in a key role. I really, really like what the SciFi Channel does with its mini-series adaptations and I can't wait to see what they do with another great genre classic. If they keep on doing productions like this I might be forced to continue watching the channel, even though they cancelled Farscape. Fingers definitely crossed. Excuse me while I go and watch my copy of Dune and drool on Alec Newman.
DreamWorks is making an animated movie named Space Monkeys. How cool is that. I would go see this movie on the basis of the title alone and the fact that it's based around monkeys who were involved in the NASA space program during the 1950's is just icing on the cake. It'll be like The Right Stuff for the simian set. I love it, everyone has to go see this movie. Look at the monkey, look at the monkey.
Angel: The Series might not be as dead as we all thought it was. Rumors are flying that 20th Century Fox and Mutant Enemy are in talks to film a sixth season of the popular show. I'm not sure if that will eventually amount to a hill of beans, but it's a hopeful sign, nonetheless. I still can't believe that the WB cancelled Angel so that they could do a remake of Dark Shadows that horrifically cheesy vampire soap-opera from the sixties. I blame reality TV, really I do;-).
Speaking of dead things, how many of you knew that a remake of George Romero's Dawn of the Dead is coming out next week? I don't know a lot about either the original or the remake, but it looks kind of cool. I love apocolyptic, surviving the end of the world kinds of stories and this one sounds really interesting. It cast is good, the story sounds compelling and there'll be zombies to be destroyed! You can't get much better then that.
This is just way too funny. Elijah Wood in a movie about soccer (football) hooligans. I admit, I think it's cool just because the article used the word hooligan to describe the movie and I think that's one of the funniest words ever;-). It just sounds very British, violent and funny, a winning combination in my book.
